John Fallon's "The Capstan Bar" in Dublin

A small, traditional pub opposite St. Patrick's Cathedral. We found John Fallon's on the recommendation of a local. It's exactly what you imagine an Irish pub to be, including the locals behind the bar. Unfortunately, it's a bit far from our hotel near Trinity College; otherwise, we probably would have gone there more often.

Tucked away and easy to miss if you don’t know it, The Capstan Bar is one of those rare gems that truly lives up to the saying: great things come in small packages. It may not be the most famous spot in Dublin, but it’s certainly known by those who appreciate quality and authenticity. The atmosphere is warm, genuine, and refreshingly unpretentious—exactly what you want from a proper local bar. And the Guinness? Simply outstanding. Consistently poured to perfection, with that rich, creamy head and a flawless draw, it’s as good as you’ll find anywhere in the city. If you’re looking for character, quality, and a truly excellent pint, this place delivers every single time. A five-star experience without question.

Great spot for a pint. Staff are always welcome and friendly. However always expect a crowd and to maybe stand. But will be worth it.

Lovely living breathing pub. I would recommend to anyone in the area especially after visiting St Patrick’s.

I have had many pints of guinness at pubs close to here while visiting Dublin, but this cool pub has the creamiest pint i have had in the city. The toasted ham and cheese sandwich was great.

Not only the bartender was very friendly but also the atmosphere in general was awesome. The pub offers limited space, but any other than that it was a great experience!
