InterContinental Dublin (by IHG) — Short Enthusiast Overview
InterContinental Dublin
A refined 5-star luxury hotel in the elegant Ballsbridge district of Dublin, InterContinental Dublin is one of the city’s most spacious and classical luxury stays — known for its resort-like calm, large landscaped gardens, and traditional grand-hotel feel just minutes from the city centre.
Originally opened in 2001 (and formerly the Four Seasons), it remains one of Dublin’s most established high-end hotels, operated by IHG Hotels & Resorts.
Atmosphere
Think:
A quiet urban palace set inside gardens — formal, polished, and intentionally calm, despite being in a capital city.
It feels less like a modern boutique hotel and more like a grand international residence: marble, chandeliers, wide corridors, and soft classical luxury rather than trendy design.
Why it stands out
Located in leafy Ballsbridge, one of Dublin’s most prestigious residential areas
Set on large private grounds with gardens and sculpture paths
Known for some of the largest hotel rooms and suites in Dublin
Full resort-style facilities (spa, pool, gym, dining, events) inside a city hotel
Quiet atmosphere despite being close to central Dublin
Signature experiences
🏊 Indoor swimming pool with large windows and spa access
🧖 ESPA-style spa with treatments, steam room, and wellness suites
🍽 Multiple dining spaces including lounge dining and afternoon tea in elegant rooms
🛏 Very large rooms and suites with marble bathrooms and garden or city views
🌿 Garden walks and landscaped outdoor areas inside the hotel grounds
What enthusiasts love most
The space (rooms feel unusually large for Dublin standards)
The calm, almost “country hotel inside a city” atmosphere
Beautiful gardens that soften the urban location
Strong sense of traditional 5-star service and formality
Ideal balance of privacy + accessibility
Style & character
Compared with other Dublin luxury hotels:
More classical and spacious than The Fitzwilliam
Less modern and dramatic than The Marker
Quieter and more residential than The Shelbourne
Less boutique, more “grand hotel residence”
Best described as:
“A tranquil garden palace hotel hidden inside Dublin’s most elegant district.”
Best for
Luxury city stays with peace and space
Business + diplomatic travel style stays
Spa relaxation in a calm environment
Guests who prefer classic, formal luxury over modern design hotels
Longer stays where room comfort matters

Over rated, on checking in I was told the room wasn’t paid for so the charged me again and took more than they where supposed too, the room was paid for in advance. I got an apology but it was the hassle of it. kitchen was under construction so there was no menu for breakfast. Coffee took 15 mins to arrive. Paid car park, Bad experience overall and won’t ever go back

Our stay at the InterContinental was perfect. The rooms were beautiful and in pristine condition and the hotel itself was gorgeous. We were blown away by the service especially. The location is also great, easy access to bus lines and a short walk to the center of Ballsbridge, and a short bus ride or taxi to Dublin City center.

Ballsbridge is Dublin's most gracious quarter — embassy territory, mature trees, Georgian architecture, and the kind of quiet dignity that feels a world away from the city bustle despite being minutes from the center — and the InterContinental Dublin inhabits this setting with appropriate elegance and considerable scale. I have stayed here on multiple visits to Dublin over the years, drawn back consistently by the spacious rooms, the reliable service, the exceptional spa, and the simply unbeatable address for exploring the southside of the city. As someone who owns property and follows real estate markets on both sides of the Atlantic, I always pay attention to what a hotel communicates about its neighborhood — and the InterContinental Ballsbridge communicates established, enduring quality with real authority. My room was generous and beautifully appointed, the kind of space that invites you to actually slow down rather than just sleep. The Seasons restaurant delivers confident modern Irish cooking with strong sourcing from Irish farms and coastal waters. The spa complex, including the impressive pool, is one of the best hotel wellness facilities in Dublin. The staff throughout have that quality that the finest Irish hospitality always produces: genuinely warm, personally attentive, and deeply proud of their city and their hotel. The InterContinental Dublin is a classic for very good reason. I return here regularly.

This is a belated review, we stayed here in May for an event. One of the best hotel experiences that I’ve had to date. Excellent service, a great room, and an overall top hotel experience. One of the highlights was breakfast, with a great selection of food and staff who were on the ball and running service the way it needs to be run. They anticipated our every want and then some! Would highly recommend!.
So my past review was a year ago and we stayed again last night as we attended an event. On arrival we where greeted by a very friendly receptionist. The room seemed nice initially but on closer inspection it was quite shabby and the walls where grimey. Like they all needed repainting. We went for breakfast in the morning. We weren’t greeted on arrival and I had to ask was it ok to sit in the bar area as the breakfast area is being refurbished. The experience left me feeling deflated, very poor service and food wasn’t great. I was quite surprised at the comparison to last year where we had a fantastic breakfast experience with very competent waiting staff. Overall I would say the place is in need of a refurb and I understand it’s hard to find staff but what happened to the staff that where working last year. Overall quite disappointed.

We visited the InterContinental this afternoon to celebrate my mum’s birthday. Our party consisted of 10 people (8 adults and 2 children), and unfortunately, the experience did not meet expectations for a 5-star hotel.
Around half of our group ordered steak, with some upgrading from striploin to fillet. When placing our order, we were informed that all steaks had to be cooked the same way. We were told this was hotel policy. In a 5-star establishment charging premium prices, being told we could not choose how our steak was cooked was extremely disappointing. After raising the issue, we were eventually told they could accommodate individual cooking preferences, but only as a one-time exception. This should not be considered an exception, but standard service.
Service throughout the afternoon was also very slow. I mentioned twice that we were there to celebrate my mum’s birthday, yet this was overlooked when her dessert was brought out, which was very disappointing.
Overall, the experience did not reflect the level of service or flexibility one would expect from a hotel of this calibre.

What's not to like about this hotel? Great location, great facilities, super quality interior decor with quality furniture. The food is excellent with first-class service. It's got to be the place to stay when in Dublin if you want to be spoiled.
