Hillgrove Hotel Leisure Club in Monaghan

Attended a dinner and conference at the Hillgrove. Didn't stay so cannot comment on the rooms, but I can say that the service was superb and the food delicious. Special credit to the waiter who served our table - Jimmy McKenna who was so professional, courteous and helpful.

Myself and my partner stayed for two nights here. The Good: The service was excellent, the staff are very friendly and very helpful and accommodating. There is a swimming pool, jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and spa available and a small gym. We did not avail of the spa services but we enjoyed the jacuzzi and the sauna. The hotel serves food until 9pm, and the bar was open until 1am when we went. The cocktails were very well made, the barman was friendly. The breakfast is buffet-style and had a range of hot food items. The checkout was 12pm. The areas which could be improved: The rooms are not just up to the standard you would expect from a 4* hotel in all honesty. We were initially placed in a room that was very dull and old in appearance and we were disappointed walking into it as it did not look like the photos at all. The paint on the walls were cracked in several places quite significantly around the windows, there was a stain on the roof. The room didn’t feel overly clean, and there were plenty of cobwebs. The staff at the front desk were very accommodating and we were moved to another room which was much nicer, it was clean and bright. I would still call it a stretch to label it as a 4* hotel, I would see it more as a 3*, there were basic facilities in the new room too. But we were satisfied that this room resembled the photographs more than the first room did and was a lot cleaner. I think the hotel in general just needs a renovation and a good deep clean. It is quite tired looking in places. If you look a bit closer you can see its age (cracks, dirt and scuffs on doors and walls in the hallways, dirt in the elevator). The pool area is also tired looking, cracks on the floor etc, you can definitely tell its age, and the changing rooms were not clean, and the floors were visibly dirty. I did notice one staff member walk towards the jacuzzi area beside the pool in their outdoor shoes to talk to someone, and this left dirt and mud on the floor which people walked through in their bare feet. Also if anyone wants to use the swimming pool, you must wear a swimming cap, we did not have one so we didn’t use the pool. I want to emphasise I cannot fault the staff at all though, they are assets to the hotel and were all fantastic, from the desk staff to the bar staff, the housekeepers and everyone in-between. It is a relaxed hotel environment and it is worth visiting for the price.

A very large hotel, great location, unfortunately in my opinion, rooms are beginning to look and feel tired. Hotel very busy with families

I attended a recent family christening here. I was very disappointed when we arrived at the given time, to discover that the room being used was not prepared. Despite the cake, balloons and poster being handed over to the hotel the previous day in order to be assembled - these were not. The welcome poster was left draped across a chair in the nearby restaurant (rather than stuck up on a wall or on a easel), the balloons were all tied together and left behind the door (instead of separated and some put on each table), and the cake was not taken out of the kitchen for display. The family had to ask for all these things to be done, while the guests arrived. It seemed very unprofessional and unwanted. Positives: the food was nice and tasty. I had turkey and ham, and lemon cheesecake; both of which were delicious.

The hotel is a great family break where the kids were welcomed with goodie bags. The family room was spacious and comfortable. The onsite swimming pool and restaurant were great to have. Hotel near the town of Monaghan.
