There’s something quietly noble about a place like Lags Bar. No pretense, no tasting menus, no one trying to reinvent the potato — just solid food, the kind that fills your stomach and makes you feel human again.
We started with the Mexican potatoes — a Frankenstein’s monster of spuds, minced meat, and molten cheese. Messy, indulgent, and exactly what you want with the first sip of a pint. It’s not a starter that asks for approval; it just shows up and gets the job done.
The steak sandwich followed — simple, meaty, unapologetic. The fish and chips came out crisp, golden, and properly fried — the kind of thing that reminds you how good bar food can be when people still give a damn.
And of course, a pint of Guinness — dark, creamy, perfectly settled. It’s the punctuation mark at the end of a meal that doesn’t try to impress, only to satisfy.
Lags Bar isn’t chasing trends. It’s feeding people. And that’s something worth sitting down for.
Just had what can only be described as the best meal of our holiday so far .Malaysian curry for herself and sirloin steak for me .this was excellently cooked and very tasty. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend eating here.great value for money and service brilliant
We are a family of three adults. I’m coeliac ( gluten free) and my daughter has a serious nut allergy. When we arrived, without a reservation, we explained our dietary issues. The lady we spoke with could not have been nicer. “My mother is coeliac and there are no nuts in the kitchen”. She was friendly and warm and very reassuring. A very helpful server showed us to our table and took out order. One GF burger, one burger and one chickpea pea burger. When the meal arrived I was very impressed my burger was delicious. And the waitress told us that all our fries were GF so we could share.
If I lived near I would eat here often and try the steak which the table beside us praised highly.
It was lovely to eat somewhere that understood our dietary needs so well.
