So I was here for 1 night for a function. While the room was large and spacious it was badly laid out, when I got to the room the kettle and tea and coffee pieces were in the wardrobe, normally they are left on a table, so they are visible to the visitors. However, I had to drag the table over to put the tray on so it was near a plug socket to use the kettle. There was no central light, just lamps and one that didn't work. Also extra switches that turned nothing on that I could see. No information in the room about the WiFi, I'd rather be connected to a secure site after paying so much for a room than an unsecured site, which is what came up when I checked for WiFi on my phone. Only one side of the bed had usb outlets for charging. Both sides should realistically have them. In fact I could probably have done that while I was there it's not that difficult and it keeps up to date with the times we're living in now. Foreign tourists may not have the correct plugs, so the USB outlet is ideal. The decor on the first floor before you get to any rooms was absolutely beautiful and very pretty. But there should be signs on which side is for the lift or stairs. As I kept getting mixed up. When I checked in, I was told I was on the first floor. Which was kind of correct, the lift is very painfully slow. While I found the area to where my room should be due to the sign, I wasn't told at reception that I had to go through another door, down about 6 steps and my room was down there. Not great when you have a heavy suitcase or a walking stick like some of the guests did. Luckily a staff member appeared and she asked could she help. Maybe that area down the steps should be lit up better or a sign inside the door that the rooms are down there, when I went through the door the first time, it looked like a private area. Also checking in from 3pm isn't great, especially if there is a ceremony on at 2 and checkout is at 12. Quite a few guests arrived and couldn't yet check in. I wanted to freshen up before the function started as I had no choice but to drive in my outfit, but I couldn't check in to my room until after the ceremony was finished. I didn't want to do this in the bathrooms with everyone else there. While the staircase is absolutely beautiful and amazing for taking photos on, it would be a death trap for drunk people. They wouldn't have the patience to wait for the lift and would more than likely fall up or down. Plus I was wearing a dress yesterday and I didn't like using the stairs to go up to my room because anyone in reception was able to see up my dress because of the gaps in the staircase. That made me feel very uncomfortable and I did use it to get to my room during the night because the lift was too slow. I will say breakfast was great, everything that was laid out with the cereals, fruits, juices etc. They even had gluten free options and I had fresh plate made up for me as I'm coeliac and have to be care with cross contamination. I got gluten free bread in its own wrapper it was good. The staff were ready to take away your plates and things when you were finished. I would suggest that on the table number sign for the dinner, it would be included what time dinner would be at. If I had known beforehand, I would have to stayed in my room and rested for a bit longer after the ceremony. The meal for the evening was lovely, the dessert I had was delicious and a massive slice, so I was very grateful. I would have liked a second cup of tea as I hadn't had a drink at that stage. Also, the finger food that came out later, I was completely left out of that, which I find very annoying. There wasn't anything there for me to eat, but for everyone else, cake, sausages and sandwiches. I mean the gluten bread was in the kitchen so some sandwiches could have been made up for me too. I don't choose to be gluten free, I have to eat this way for life because of my coeliac disease. There was lots of parking spaces, lovely Christmas decorations too.

This hotel is a must-see venue. Lovely location in County Carlow fabulous village. Great pubs, steeped in local history. This is easily the best 3 star hotel I've visited in Ireland in a long time. Breakfast was cooked to order. Can't wait to visit again
