Lovely old house, video of Daniel O'Connell's life, coffee shop, great variety of walks in the grounds, including a short path to the beach and all free of charge.
Beautiful grounds with access to a gorgeous strand. The house can be visited and its history is fascinating. I would have liked to be able to visit more rooms and have access to guided tours. The catering service could be better: more choices and better presentation. There is a lovely sitting area outside to eat and drink.
Interesting little museum with very friendly staff. Beautiful surrounding area as well with well-maintained exotic gardens and an incredible beach. Worth a stop if you’re around the area.
I wasn’t expecting such a unique experience at this OPW site. We sat through the 20-minute movie on the history of the home, and I highly recommend doing so if you can. The grounds are beautiful as well as the home. Well worth stopping if you have the time!
Darrynane House is the ancestral home of Daniel O'Connell (1775 - 1847), nicknamed 'the Liberator'. Lawyer, civil rights activist, politician and statesman, but above all he was the founder of the Irish Republic, no wonder he is mentioned regularly and you come across his name everywhere. The house is also located in a small National Park of 120 hectares. Forests, gardens with a wealth of exotic plants, which thrive here because of the warm Gulf Stream, sandy beaches and an island with the ruins of a 10th century monastery.
