We visited The Thatch as part of a bus tour, so frankly I wasn’t expecting much, but I didn’t hear one complaint from the thirty of us. That’s really amazing when you think about it. The food was very good from the starters to the desserts, and was all served at a good timing. Go and enjoy!

Lovely Pub/ Restaurant operated by Des Connole and his family just a short spin outside Birr in Co. Offaly. This popular pub is busy at the weekends and reservations are almost always required. The menu should have wide appeal with a very tasty food offering. The staff when we visited were young, enthusiastic and very pleasant and provided great service. Both I and my wife are looking forward to a return visit soon.!

Had sea bass for Sunday lunch and once piece of the sea bass was not cooked . I informed the waitress and the manager but felt it was not taken serious.

We found an absolute gem! We went to The Thatch in Crinkill, Birr, and it was the most delicious meal we’ve had yet. We’ve been all over Ireland, driving through every county, and this is a “must go to” place for fabulous food, excellent service, and the most friendly people. The fish dinner I had was the best I’ve had in Ireland. My friend had fish and chips and loved it as well. The owner, Des, could not have been more accommodating and, in fact, he gave us some great recommendations of places to visit—our very favorite spots come from local recommendations. The atmosphere at the restaurant was just perfect. Sitting by a lit fire, we were able to chat as good music played in the background which wasn’t too loud. It was a cozy place. The history is so interesting—this thatched roof place has been in the family for over 200 years. We highly recommend it for a good meal or a pint, and are sure you’ll not be disappointed! Thank you Des and staff, for this exceptional experience.

Woodfield

27/09/2025: Lovely little place for food. Have also bought many trees and shrubs here too. Great coffee!
25/09/2025: The Woodfield Cafe was recommended to us as a great lunch spot with healthy, organic foods, and it did not disappoint! It’s tucked away in a garden center that was closed for the season, but the cafe was open with indoor and outdoor seating. I had a delicious bacon sandwich on homemade bread and a hot latte. It was the perfect lunch stop on our drive from Kilkenny to Galway.

The Loft

20/09/2025: Honestly not a great breakfast, food was ok, but for nearly €25 I was expecting a bit more, 12 euro for 2 sausages, 2 rashers and an egg just doesn’t seem very justified. Presentation was lacklustre
08/09/2025: This is the cutest cafe we had lunch at during our 2 weeks long trip to Ireland. It is not easy to find since it is located above a pharmacy/fragnance shop and the sign is quite small, though. The venue is airy, bright, clean, cozy and nicely decorated. We loved their sandwiches and they had a very rare desert, - "Pavlova", which was out of this world. Coffee was excellent as well. Highly recommend!
