03/04/2025: No heat in rooms despite very cold temperatures. Plumbing problems and nobody to address the problems. Very disappointing.
And, the response from the ‘owner’ says it all. Condescending and disrespectful.
The ‘thermostat’ did not work.
Our travel companions had similar problems and, in addition, had overflowing toilet that required opening the windows. No exaggeration.
28/03/2025: Our return to Kells Bay House and Gardens, a place we fondly remembered from 2019, turned into a regrettable experience. We even convinced our friends to join us, which compounded our disappointment.
Upon checking in at 1:00 PM, a strong sewage odor permeated our room. We immediately requested a room change. While a suitable room was available, we were told it was reserved for our second night, necessitating a mid-stay move. Despite this inconvenience, we were willing to relocate due to the unbearable smell.
After lunch at the excellent Thai restaurant, we were informed a plumber would address the issue at 8:00 PM. We spent the afternoon enjoying the beautiful gardens and bay, and had a pleasant dinner, during which the owner, Billy, assured us the problem was resolved, showing us a picture of a broken pipe. We relaxed in the living room until 11:00 PM, hopeful the issue was fixed.
However, upon returning to our room and closing the windows, the stench returned, even stronger. Attempts to contact the hotel via phone were unsuccessful, so we emailed the owner. Forced to endure the fumes, we opened all windows, but the vapors still caused eye irritation. My sleep tracker showed a mere 1.5 hours of sleep.
The following morning, staff offered a room change, which we accepted. Had this option not been available, we would have left. The new room was odor-free, but the provided towels were shockingly tattered and torn (see attached photo).
We’ve contacted the owner three times requesting a refund for the first night’s appalling conditions, but have received no response.
Our friends also experienced significant discomfort, as their heating failed on both nights, leaving them freezing.
We are deeply disappointed and will not be returning to Kells Bay House and Gardens. We strongly advise others to reconsider their stay.
