DiFontaine's Pizzeria in Dublin

Exactly the pizza I was craving

I went for a quick dinner, I chose a good slice of pizza for 6.50, and it was very good.

great slice, laid back atmosphere, great service, and the Latin music playing in the background was a bonus.

I'm grading this on a Dublin curve. This is Dublin, not New York, so even though I'm from NYC, I won't hold it to the same standard. If I did, I would give it 3 stars. That's not a terrible rating- the average neighborhood NYC pizzeria is about that. People just mythologize all pizza in NYC based on a handful of elite places that pop up on social media, yelp, or Google. As a New Yorker, I always find it a bit weird to fly all the way to another country to eat their version of your food. You have pizza at home, why are you eating it somewhere else? BUT - as I walked by the place, there was something about the scent and the interior that brought back memories of a classic neighborhood joint when you would get a slice and a coke on your way home from school and hang out with your friends for a while. I was genuinely intrigued by the nostalgia of it, so decided to give it a go. I got two slices from there and two from a nearby place that also does NY style slices. Got back to our hotel and we dug in and compared them, both to each other and to NY slices. So how was it? I won't get into the other place, but if you look at my review history, I wrote a review not long before this one. Let's just say I was really impressed, with a couple of important caveats. As for DiFontaines - If you're a New Yorker, I think the best frame of comparison in terms of taste and quality is Sbarro. Sbarro is a well known chain throughout the tourist areas in Manhattan. They serve pizza by the slice with various toppings. They cook pizza in pizza ovens. Visually, it looks more or less like a normal NY slice, except a bit bigger. But despite that, all New Yorkers know that it doesn't taste quite like a proper NY slice. That's DiFontaine's. The interior is 100% on the money. The scent is as NY pizza as it gets. Even the side of oregano and cheese to add is on the counter like a real NY spot. But when eating it, i thought it was fine, but the texture, dough, cheese and char were all a little off compared to a classic old school NY slice. It was New Yorkish, but not quite there. Still, I think it's been in business for decades for a good reason. It's a good slice, a good approximation of the NY experience, and a great late night indulgence to absorb all that beer and whiskey you've been drinking.

This was one of the best pizza i have ever had in Ireland.

Pretty decent stop if you’re in need of a quick bite. Kind of reminded me of Joe’s pizza in New York. You can get by the slice or whole pizzas though the slices are a good size. Not a whole lot of seating and it can get packed fast. Glad we had lunch here!

On a rainy Tuesday afternoon DiFontaines was warm and welcoming. Pizza delicious (I love all the New York connection pizza names). Excellent value and great service. I will definitely be back.
