Each pub in Ireland, I have found, has it's own unique style and experience.
When you walk in the doors, you can almost tell by what pictures they have on the wall. This one is adorned with pictures of musical past and present. The best pubs are always the small quaint and cozy places that have some semblance to houses. In the middle is always a kitchen. Centuries ago, a force attempted to stop the Irish music and their bards. The bards used to go from home to home, Manor to Manor, castle castle, instead of the pubs. In fact, it is relatively new where Ireland is concerned to have music in the pubs spreading music this had to be dangerous. The bards would come to sing their loves and woes. To this force who attempted to stomp it out, this had to be dangerous because when you hear Irish music, when your soul hears the deep emotion of the people around you, you must feel something.
Friels brings to my mind this old Irish Homestead. You walk in and there is a gathering room. It opens into the biggest small kitchen in the world. In the middle of this kitchen is a table where ancient modern bards such as Jackie Daly sit and wax on and give us their talented gifts, gifts held in their Gaelic soul.
The ceilings are only about 7 foot tall and the wall surround you like a well sheltered set of arms from home. I have found that in such a place, it is impossible to hold onto sorrows, although when the music stops, it rushes back to me somehow.
Moments in this pub chased away many of my ghost and quick into my spirit once more as if my soul was in the hands of a healer at my final moments, who brings me back to simply say goodbye.
The owner is usually there with his compatriots. They know ye or by the second pint they surely will. And by the third, you will very likely know ye. There is something here in this pub that cannot be transported or properly told. There's a heart that has seen joys and troubles and yet is still open to the next story.
You will find the coldest and creamiest pints, the brightest smiles. And you will find a place to sit. If you are on holiday and need a place to relax or maybe you are searching for something of which you know not, you will likely find it here. You owe yourself a favor to stay in and around this town or to take a trip from anywhere in the world to sit and have a pint and listen to music at this pub.
