One of my favourite places to visit in Wicklow, whether just to stop in for a stroll around the charming gardens and have a pot of tea and a warm, freshly baked scone with jam, butter, and cream, or have a celebratory family luncheon. A place of immense atmosphere that brings you to another time, it is like a portal to a world that barely exists anymore, with fantastic, kind, and sometimes wonderfully comic staff that could be straight out of a Flann O'Brien novel... it's no wonder this place attracts writers and painters and artists of all kinds who use the rooms and grounds for peace, good conversation, and inspiration. The food is delicious and they grow many of the ingredients they use on their land. Visit Hunter's to have an experience you are unlikely to receive in any other modern, fashionable Irish destination hotel or resort. A truly one of a kind place, untouched by time. Long may it be so.

It's always worth a visit to this charming hotel full of character, maintaining its old world atmosphere, the decor & furnishings are in keeping with this historical building which dates back to the late 17th century. The food & service are of a very high standard as always.

In my mind Ireland has lost so many things of beauty over the decades, but Hunters hotel has not changed since my first visit over 50 years ago. Having been brought there for my birthday luncheon where everything was every bit as good as I expected, even the weather which meant an enjoyable walk round the unique gardens. While enjoying today's Sunday luncheon with relations, it dawned on me how nice if a group of actors could arrive and sit down at an opposite table in period costume and act as though they were part of a Mrs Marpole drama. Especially as the perfect atmosphere is in this wonderful timewarp of a place, to have a number such enactments during the year.

Paddy's Bar and Restaurant

27/12/2024: I've been putting off writing this review because the prospect of saying everything that needs to be said is daunting. Maybe impossible. And also because I nominated them for a wedding venue award, which took awhile. My wife and I had our wedding and reception here in October for about 30 people. The atmosphere was perfect - cozy and intimate but not overcrowded or stuffy. It felt comfortable and homey but not cheap. A quintessential country pub, with all the tradition that carries. The food was incredible (spit-roasted local lamb over an open hearth turf fire, anyone?), the photographer was great, and the music (both live and DJ) was sincerely amazing. Everything was included in the wedding package, even two nights at a stunning cottage overlooking the lough. But Naoise, the coordinator, truly sent it over the top. She was constantly available, proactively engaged, and just went miles above and beyond to remove the stress of planning a wedding from overseas. I cannot speak highly enough of this place. They made us feel somehow simultaneously celebrated and part of the community. It was a perfect wedding. Absolutely perfect. If you're looking for a genuine human experience from an alternative microwedding venue that boasts waterfront dining in a rural Gaeltacht community, this is your spot. We laughed, we cried, we danced, and we cannot stop talking about it. It might not be my home, but it now occupies a suspiciously home-shaped place in my heart. Naoise, we'll be back!
