Ichigo Ichie in Cork

We ate here for a special occasion recently and didn't feel it was good value, really, or even very nice food. We had 3 courses, and the edamame beans we got as a starter were the only real veg we saw. I asked when ordering whether we should order veg on the side for our main course and were told no, but the plates were lacking. My main course was Kuro Curry - the black curry sauce was not very interesting but rich and drowned the entire plate so every bite tasted just like the first I was bored of it before I was half way through. The accompanying fermented bell pepper (yes, a veg!) was tiny in portion, less than a garnish, less than a forkful not enough to impart any flavour over the curry. My gubbeen smoked cheesecake was interesting but not really pleasing and not sweet enough to be described as dessert (throw a bit of ham in and it would have made a nice lunch). We ate using a gift voucher so blew the last of it on some warm saki which was nice but as others have noted, seems overpriced. All in all, expensive and disappointing.

The place is lovely. The service was good but a little too long at first, we waited 40 minutes to get drink and starters. The starters were delicious, very tasty ! I definitely recommend the pork. The udon butter soup was good but I did not find Japanese taste in it. The rice and grilled salmon were very boring and not tasty. We enjoy some Sake that was good but very expensive, I am not so sure if it was a special Sake but for sure I did not understand the price.

Tempura was quite good, but this was far from the best Japanese restaurant. Distinctly Western atmosphere and the simple menu seemed so too. Didn’t see Japanese faces among the staff.

A good place to eat in with friends but not something that made me wow, except dessert ( green tea panacotta with lichi ice cream) Others liked squid in broth, salmon with rice. I had Beef tartar: my personal opinion it was average and I personally prefer it is cut to much smaller pieces. Not much mushroom taste or flavor in tempura mushrooms either. Also our table was in the hallway but I remember I have asked for a quiet & cozy corner. The hallway was darkish to my taste. The ladies inside were very friendly and helpful. The service speed was excellent. Tips were included in the bill.

Absolutely amazing from start to finish. The staff were so welcoming and were genuinely happy to help with any questions we had. The food was beyond my expectations, and I had seriously high hopes. Every dish was perfect, but the Black Curry was the showstopper for me. When I say it was one of the best meals I have ever had I mean it! We are already booked to go back in two weeks for my birthday.

Definitely no need for the €€€€ rating on this platform. They have shifted to a more casual dining experience in the last year and now it's more like €€ experience. The food is great. Well worth a visit. We'll be back with the kids next time
