Visited Jack's again for Father's Day with my two daughters, having also dined here last year.
I made an online reservation for 7:30pm, but when we arrived our table was not ready. After a wait, we were eventually seated at a large round table beside the entrance to the bar area. We were given menus and placed our order before the table had even been set. The cutlery, glasses and table settings were then brought out bit by bit after we had ordered. Unfortunately, being located beside the bar meant we had to listen to loud conversations and constant foot traffic throughout the meal, which took away from the dining experience.
To be fair, there were positives. My younger daughter loved her soup and pasta, and both my older daughter and I enjoyed the pan-fried cod. The fish was beautifully cooked and, for my daughter, it was her first experience of fish that wasn't deep-fried. She genuinely enjoyed it.
However, the value for money was disappointing. The scallop starter (€17.50) consisted of three small scallops with very minimal garnish and presentation. While the scallops themselves were nicely cooked, the dish felt underwhelming for the price and lacked the attention to detail one would expect at this level.
The cod was also very well cooked, but at €33 per portion, both my daughter and I felt the portion size was small. The side vegetables and potatoes shared between the two mains were extremely limited. My daughter summed it up perfectly when she said, "It was lovely, but it's too small for €33."
Jack's markets itself as a fine dining restaurant, and that is perhaps where my disappointment stems from. Fine dining is about more than locally sourced ingredients and competent cooking. It is about atmosphere, presentation, service, attention to detail and creating an experience that feels special from start to finish.
While the quality of the produce and cooking was evident, the presentation of the dishes, the delayed seating, the noisy table beside the bar, and the overall lack of refinement meant the experience felt far removed from what I would expect from a restaurant positioning itself as fine dining.
There is no doubt that quality local ingredients are being used, but quality ingredients alone do not create a fine dining experience. Unfortunately, the overall setting, presentation, service and value for money did not justify either the reputation or the prices being charged.
A disappointing experience on what should have been a special Father's Day meal.

Jack's is really special.
Views here are one of a kind - would seriously recommending fitting in a trip to Cromane if you are in Kerry. The Guinness is very good and the set-up itself is fabulous. The restaurant and pub is split off perfectly, so it's the perfect spot for a couple of quiet pints, and/or for a lovely sit down meal, with some of the best seafood you've had.
I had the Salmon and crispy bacon with fresh veg and potatos, was fantastic. Would recommend reserving a table to avoid disappointment!

Great food. We had John Dory and turbot. Staff were very friendly. There was a group of older people on a day out. As a result it was a little noisy with their singing. Was nice to see them having a good time.
