Myself and one of my friends had the teriyaki chicken don and it tasted so good. The chicken was marinated and the rice mixed with the sauce was heavenly and a great mix of savoury and sweet. The egg was chopped up very finely and had a soft texture and the green beans had a very refreshing flavour and I think it was blanched so it had a very refreshing crunch to it! Some of the juices sunk down to the bottom of the bowl and it was such a sweet and delicious flavour. I would say we waited quite a while but there was only one cook when we went so it made sense. The inside is decorated really well and the atmosphere felt really welcoming. My other friend had the tempura sushi roll and miso soup and she really enjoyed it. Price wise, you are definitely getting more than what you paid for. I've paid more in other restaurants for less amounts of food. I paid €18 for the teriyaki chicken don and I would definitely say I got my money's worth. The wait was like 40 minutes for 3 people and it was quite empty, so if you are on a tight schedule you might not want to go, but I personally don't mind waiting 40 minutes for a meal. 10/10 I would really recommend to go and I'm definitely going again!! 🤤🤤🙏🙏

Very quiet, interesting vibes. Very tasty meal, freshly made sushi by a Japanese chef or maybe not a chef. Does not matter, the food was delicious. I am not a fan, it is way outside my box but I enjoyed the experience. That tells a lot. We will be back definitely. You can go and try too🙂

We are so glad we stumbled upon this place during our stay in Galway. This is a one man show, a small restaurant with a limited but exemplary menu. The authentic Japanese cuisine was absolutely delicious. Highly recommend.

Kappa-ya, one of the most authentic Japanese restaurants in Galway, Ireland, offers delicious and savory cuisine. As far as I know, it's the only restaurant in the area that serves pork tonkatsu. I will definitely come back here again.

The food was exceptional!! Freshly made from the kitchen of a well experienced chef. The flavour of the food was just 👌👌👌👌 so different from the other japanese restaurants I have tasted in Ireland so far. I had the teriyaki mackerel and I know when fish served aren't fresh but the in this restaurant, they obviously served the freshest seafood! Too bad they have limited opening hours but will definitely recco this place if you are her in Galway.

What a treasure this place is! There was only one gentleman working tonight, seating tables, cooking the food, and serving, but he was charming and the food was made and served with love and intention. I had the barley tea, miso soup, and Katsu-don, all of which was heavenly. The tea was warming on a drizzly night, the tofu in the soup was tender and the broth flavorful. The pork in the katsu-don was crispy and piping hot, the rice sticky and delicious. This place feels like a pocket of magic in Galway city. I cannot wait to come back.

La comida aquí es auténticamente japonesa y disfrutamos de deliciosos rollos de bento y sushi. Hay una variedad de platos interesantes que incluyen tapas también.

Tomodachi

03/11/2025: I've eaten in Tomodachi many times and have always loved it: it's by far the best Japanese in Galway. Unfortunately there's a but. We never felt that it was good value for money, at least in terms of quantity, but it wasn't too blatant. However over the last year it's become worse and worse. On our last and sadly final visit we ordered Edamame, pork gyoza, a rainbow roll and a chicken and prawn yakiudon. The gyoza and roll weren't generous but were fine. As for the other dishes... The edamame consisted of a tiny pile of maybe 15 to 20 bean pods. It would have fit easily in my closed palm. The yakiudon had 6 or 7 thumb-tip sized pieces of chicken (I'm including the fatty bits) and 4, FOUR, prawns. I called this to the attention of the person I guessed to be the senior waiter only to have her respond very politely and overly sympathetically, in what I took to be a genuine attempt to mollify us. She apologised for the disappointment and explained about the increasing costs. We're all aware of the crisis but the quantities mentioned above are just flatly insulting. With 1 Asahi, a hot sake and a yuzu tea it came to €110. 10% service charge included and no attempt to address my complaint. €110 for a small, quick meal for two. Sorry Tomodachi, we won't be back at those prices.
02/11/2025: Absolutely amazing. Food is delicious, and fast to arrive. Pricey, but you definitely get what you pay for. The servers are very friendly and attentive. 10/ 10. I will Absolutely be returning

24/10/2025: Food is amazing, just hope it stays consistent and always good, and I definitely will always come back. Would be good to have delivery or lunch options as well. Papadam given was from yesterday and would prefer the fresh ones. Biryani is good and the meat mutton and beef are tender, definitely kudos to the chef. Servers are definitely new but it's okay, good for learning and hopefully better in the future. Food does take a while, but I assume the food is fresh, which is acceptable. Overall an amazing experience, and would come back again to support this business. Just hope food stays consistent, always good, and will try other food in menu.
18/10/2025: Orderd Beef fry and Chicken Biriyani. Great spot for south Indian food in Galway.
