The atmosphere is very authentic, and the service is lovely. However, I'd only give the food 3 out of 5 stars because I didn't find the portion size justified by the price. Otherwise, it's a highly recommended stop on the way to the Black Valley.

My husband and I biked through the Gap of Dunloe before stopping here for lunch last week. We happened to arrive right around the same time as many students on an end of school year trip. The staff handled the huge influx of customers efficiently. It was impressive. The soup I had was one of the best soups I've ever eaten. Thanks to everyone at Kate Kearney's Cottage!

Thanks to Donna for the service and soda bread? We went on a Friday night when there was music playing, it was awesome. All of our food was perfect!

I would rate Kate Kearney's Cottage as average, not bad but with room for improvement.

Great seafood chowder and toasted ham and cheese sandwich for lunch on a Tuesday with two small kids! Their food is a little pricey unfortunately, but that’s probably because they cater for tourists and big loads of tour buses all the time.

Kate Kearney’s Cottage is a traditional Irish inn located at the entrance to the famous Gap of Dunloe, one of Kerry’s most spectacular landscapes. The cottage has stood for over 150 years and has historically been the starting point for excursions through the pass. Many visitors begin their journey here on foot, by bicycle, or in a jaunting car, the region’s iconic horse-drawn carriages. The cottage takes its name from Kate Kearney, a semi-legendary 19th-century figure known in local tales for her beauty and her famous homemade bootleg whisky, poitín. The cottage is appreciated for its authentic atmosphere: * traditional white façade; * warm interior with stone and wood; * frequent Irish music; * a meeting point for hikers and photographers. The natural setting around the cottage is remarkable: * MacGillycuddy’s Reeks mountains; * Narrow roads lined with stone; * Glacial valleys and small lakes.

McHughs Traditional Pub & Restaurant

11/06/2026: We stayed overnight in our Van in the top carpark thanks to the hospitality of the landlord. The breakfast was amazing 1 full Irish with toast & coffee. 1 eggs benedict & coffee. The Guiness the evening before was welcome too! Lovely staff 👌
01/06/2026: This forward-thinking landlord has created a peaceful, level area for RV's and campervans at this lovely pub. My husband was hospitalised leaving me alone with a dog who has fits under stress, in our van. I was'nt able to go every day but I don't know what I would have done without them and their kindness. Thank you.
