Visiting up from Cork of a Saturday, we stopped into Matt the Thresher just after midday (around 12:20) and at first it was surprisingly quiet. That calm didn’t last long and very quickly we understood why this place has such a reputation.
The menu had a great selection with plenty of variety, including some excellent fish specials. We ordered the chicken supreme and the chicken burger, and both were absolutely outstanding. Truly some of the nicest food we’ve ever had, fresh, full of flavour, and cooked to perfection.
What really stood out, though, was the staff. There were quite a few of them on the floor when we arrived, which felt a bit unusual at first, but within ten minutes it all made sense. Groups and groups of customers started arriving, and every single one was welcomed with a smile. The teamwork was incredible to watch. From seating guests to taking orders and delivering food, they worked with the speed and precision of an F1 pit crew changing tyres. Efficient, seamless, and still genuinely friendly throughout.
The atmosphere, service, and food combined made for an exceptional experience from start to finish. It became crystal clear why this spot gets so busy, it deserves to.
Absolutely fantastic in every way. Highly recommend, and we’ll 100% be back next time we’re Birdhill direction.
