Mizu Modern Japanese Cuisine in Killarney

We visited Mizu for lunch during our stay in Killarney to celebrate my husband’s birthday. Unfortunately, the experience was disappointing. About three weeks in advance, I contacted the restaurant via Instagram and specifically requested the table with the two sofas. I explained that we were coming to celebrate my husband’s birthday, and I still have the correspondence confirming this arrangement. When we arrived, however, we were shown to a completely different small table in a rather dark area. I explained that I was Maria and that I had specifically reserved the sofa table, but the waiter told us that we could not have it because there were only two of us and it was a “busy time.” What made this particularly disappointing was that the restaurant was actually almost empty. During the entire time we were there, only two or three other customers arrived. The table we had requested could easily have been given to us, especially since it had been arranged approximately three weeks beforehand for a birthday celebration. When we had finished our lunch and were already preparing to leave and pay, the waiter suddenly asked us to stay. At first I did not understand why. Only then did he quietly tell me that the chef had prepared a birthday surprise for my husband. Until that moment, nobody had mentioned his birthday or given any indication that they remembered the occasion. By then, unfortunately, our experience had already been spoiled and we simply wanted to leave. Regarding the food, the tuna and salmon sashimi were fresh and tasty, but the slices were extremely thin and the portion was very small. The hosomaki were also very small. We also ordered the eight-piece tempura. I have eaten tempura in many restaurants and normally expect a light, thin and crispy coating. Unfortunately, the batter here was quite thick and floury, so this was the dish I enjoyed least. There were some positives, particularly the freshness and taste of the sashimi, but overall this was a disappointing experience, especially because we had planned this birthday lunch well in advance. Unfortunately, we would not return.

This is the best Japanese restaurant I’ve been too (have not been to Japan yet as a disclaimer). The vegan gyoza started the meal off on a strong note. The vegan tofu Nape was delicious with its depth of flavors in the broth as well as vegetables. Their tofu was the highlight of the dish for me. If you’re in town, would highly recommend stopping by for a meal - you won’t regret it!

Food is amazing, lots of vegetarian and vegan options. The tofu is very tasty. Good selection of food and drink. Staff are helpful and service is fast. A quick warning however, they do not appear to know what a vegetarian is and as such if you have a fish allergy as I do a vegan option is safer than vegetarian. If the restaurant is reading, fish are not vegetables. Vegetarian = no flesh - no meat, no fish, no crustaceans, no sea animals of any kind, biproducts such as eggs, cheese, and milk are ok. Pescetarian = no flesh of land animals. Sea animals are ok.

An absolute hidden gem in Killarney! 🌟Mizu absolutely blew us away. The decor is tasteful and creates a wonderful, welcoming atmosphere right away.We opted for the warm dishes (no sushi), and the food was simply fantastic! You can immediately taste that everything is prepared with super fresh ingredients. On top of that, the staff was attentive and very friendly throughout the entire evening.The absolute icing on the cake was the wonderful, witty, and charming Irishman sitting right next to us. We had brilliant conversations —he shared our deep appreciation for the great food and made our evening truly unforgettable.A flawless evening with excellent food and genuine Irish warmth. We will definitely be back!
