We wanted to try to new A La Carte menu at Mr Fox so booked tickets at the Gate theatre and decided to go before the play. We arrived just after 5 and sat in the outdoor area. It was glorious evening and the outdoor area catches the evening sun so perfect for a pre-dinner drink. We decided to stay outdoors for dinner as it was so warm. We had the beer battered langoustines to start and they're melt in the mouth delicious. They had just introduced the tiger prawn as a starter as we went for it and boy they're amazing. Enormous so one each was plenty for us. I had the short rib beef and herself had the cod. The short rib was incredible and I was assured the cod was equally incredible. We finished off with a creme brulée and it was probably the nicest I've ever had. A perfect end. We then had plenty of time to wander around to the Gate to enjoy the play, Lovesong, which btw was brilliant. Well done Mr Fox.

Amazing experience, food and service. The only slight minus was the cold welcome by the lady at the reception desk. A smile and a different welcoming phrase anything other than " what can I do for you", would be nice to match the rest of the atmosphere and well thought dishes/matching wines.

Overall, it's a good restaurant, but it doesn't really justify the hype around it. The room, the decoration and the location lack charm, but the staff is very cheerful and warm, which makes the experience pleasant. As for the cuisine, special mention for the bread and parmesan butter: a real delight. The desserts were fresh and refreshing, and the dish based on fish, gnocchi and morels was a real favorite. On the other hand, some dishes lack finesse. The attempt to revisit the crispy rice & tuna tartare with a hashbrown did not convince us. As for wine, we chose a French bottle (Côtes d’Auxerre) from the sommelier’s selection, quite expensive for its quality. In addition, a younger vintage than that displayed on the menu was served to us, without any explanation…

Nicely tucked away restaurant in the centre of Dublin. The service is diligent and the food fine to good. I'd recommend avoiding a weekend evening as the acoustics of the dining room result in an overwhelming cacophony. We could barely hear the wait staff and conversation was almost pointless. Maybe a good spot if you want to simultaneously impress and break up with someone?

Love everything about this place!!! Best food we had in Dublin and should be Michelin starred. We got a wine pairing with our experience which I would say is a must because the somalier is very knowledgeable. If we ever return to Dublin, we will be returning!!!

24/05/2025: Went to this gorgeous place for three nights running! Superb ingredients expertly cooked. Really interesting menu, fabulous ambience, and you couldn’t wish for nicer staff. We feel very privileged to have eaten here. Thank you, and we will come back soon!!
21/05/2025: First night of a week long girls trip to celebrate my sister’s birthday. Jet lag from flying from the US, and got a second wind at 9pm so ventured out of the hotel for a drink and an appetizer. Went to a famous local pub recommended by our driver, but in reality it seemed like the Dublin version of a US frat party, so we left. Walking back to the hotel and happened upon Hugo’s. The decor seemed so warm and inviting. Walked in, mentioned we wanted a cocktail and appetizer. The friendly woman at the front said ‘the kitchen is closing soon, but I have just the thing for you, come on in and have a look at the drink menu.’ Geeked out discussing whiskey with one of the servers, Ireland vs TN, so much fun! Ended up with Blue Spot whiskey and a Hugo Spritz for my sister. Delicious! The server brought brown bread and a soft white roll, with whipped chive butter - followed quickly by a beautiful charcuterie platter with a side of crispy lavash bread. Absolutely delicious! Olives, cured meats, pickled relish, capers, walnuts, etc - it was perfect and really satisfying! Everyone was friendly, and it was overall a great experience. My sister left her reading glasses on the table, and Greg personally walked them all the way to our hotel. Above and beyond!! Such a great overall experience - highly recommend. Thank you Hugo’s team, we might see you again tomorrow!
