Shades Grill in Cavan

Shades was recommended to us by a friend who said it was unreal, it’s definitely lived up to it 😊 from the welcome at the door till we left we couldn’t fault anything about it . Service was impeccable such friendly attentive staff & as for the food it was just delicious , tastiest food we’ve had in a long time , definitely worth a visit to this gorgeous restaurant. Great visit. Extremely professional crew, service was top notch. Food was excellent and very good value. Tables nicely spaced which is a rarity. Very very clean premises and a lovely atmosphere. Will definitely visit again. Must mention the waiting staff who are some of the best I've ever experienced, well done!!! 👏👏👏

A night away in Cavan and thanks to my daughter who booked Shades for the night we had a really nice meal. Great experience and one we will replicate later in the year.

A really enjoyable meal in Cavan town. The staff at Shades were all great and their Ribeye on the bone was amazing. Would have loved some local craft beer on draft or even bottle.

Love this place. Bar, resturant and smoking area are so clean and well kept. Food was amazing and service is second to none. Shades will be around to stay I hope. Well done guys

Descending the steps into this place we had high hopes based on initial glances and online reviews. Staff were a bit too casual when it came to seating as we were left standing like lemmings until eventually one of them decided to approach and offer us a table. Bear in mind we had booked ahead and the place was almost empty. As we sat waiting for our food we took a closer look at the decor and, from what online reviews and restaurant prices suggested, it felt a little grimy. It was dark, dank and the music was a tad loud for 5pm on a Wednesday. For starters we ordered the brie and soup of the day. The brie was cold and undercooked as well as overpowered by the accompanying sauce, while the tomato soup was nice but a tad salty. Mains we had the open steak sandwich, the duck taco and chicken Caesar salad. The steak was cooked medium rare as requested. The duck taco was lovely but the salsa wasn’t great. The Caesar salad was a little heavy on the dressing but otherwise quite good. For dessert we had the apple crumble with crème anglaise and the sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream. The apple crumble was ok, saved by the cream as was the sticky toffee pudding which was bone dry. Overall the food was fine, nowhere near as good as some of the reviews we read online and it was a little overpriced for what it was. The staff, like the food, were fine. They made the barest effort to be hospitable but at the same time weren’t horrible or rude. When we left and walked back up the steps to Main Street it felt like we were coming up for fresh air which really reinforced the feeling of leaving a basement instead of a restaurant that charges €30+ for a main course. Sadly, I doubt we will be returning.
