I try to go at least three times a year, purely because of the history of the place. It’s so sad that we don’t have too much in the way of the experiences Tom endured from the man himself. But such were the times.
The inn itself is cosy, great on a winter’s day and even better on a sunny evening having a pint with the ambience of the river Annascaul in the background. Great friendly staff, menu changes every year or so. Just a wonderful peaceful little retreat.
We enjoyed a nice atmosphere and dinner at the South Pole Inn. The service was very friendly and quick as well. The vegan casserole was a tasty vegetarian option and well seasoned!
Great for food when touring the Dingle peninsula. A must for history fans. The South Pole expedition memorabilia is excellent. Check out the little memorial garden across the road for Tom Crean and local involvement in the Irish War of Independence history.
This is definitely one of a kind. Very atmospheric in the main pub. Loads of stuff about Tom Crean who I admit I had never heard of. We sat at a high table next to the bar and were very well served. The fish and chips were excellent. Desserts though were not as good- apple pie needs to be hot and the cheesecake was way too sweet.
We had the wonderful experience of hearing the intriguing story of Tom Crean, the founder of The South Pole Inn. A durable man with many adventures to his credit, most notably the Shackleton expedition to the South Pole. Good food. Good service.
Me and my friends came here for a snack after our hike in Annascaul. We had soups and salad and everything was delicious. Plenty of space to sit down and very cosy atmosphere. Staff were amazing aswell
Hearty basic food. Nice beer. Friendly, helpful staff. Interesting Polar Exploration association (Tom Crear) and artefacts. Likely to be busy so book if you really want to go.
09/07/2025: Where everyone's a local.
Stopped off this time in anascual and I have to say I was delighted I did.
From entering Patcheens Bar I knew it was the right place. The big welcome, the ease of ordering was great, Food was excellent, large portions and very fresh and it is a Lovely cosy bar.
The reason id say where everyone's a local is because of Amy, the bar person / waitress / nice person. She was above excellent with the people that came in and great to see staff welcome the locals by name. She never met me before but she just chatted away as if I was a local.
I Would highly recommend.
