Fascinating glimpse into an awful time in history. Lots of information about the dreadful period of the potato famine in Ireland

Was quite impressed , hadnt expected it to be so good a tour , info , photos and the blunt truth spelt out of the effect of the famine on one small town , highly recommended visiting.

2 museums in one, the history of the famine and the historic house (you have to buy 2 different tickets) all very well maintained and constantly improving. In addition, the tickets include free access to its gardens, which are wonderful, with a walk through a forest with ancient trees and fairies. I would add that the cafeteria is very nice and has an option for vegetarians. šŸ‘ŒšŸ»

Irelandā€™s main (although not only) museum explaining the Great Hunger, an entirely avoidable tragedy, brought about by the policies of a despotic colonial government in London. The museum is excellent although the narrative and timeline can be a little difficult to follow, not helped by the (IMHO excessively) low lighting. Grey text on a grey background at low level is always going to be an issue for anyone over 50. It might be helpful to provide a guide for older visitors to read as they walk round. The museum focuses almost entirely on the Mahon family and the townlands of the Strokestown estate which provides an excellent frame to show the events, but then thereā€™s not enough to illustrate the impacts in other areas. The Hunger impacts Ireland to this day, and I feel that an opportunity is missed to link the migrations on the mid-19th Century to the migrations in to Ireland now. This is a great museum but maybe there should be more. It is also worth going to see EPIC in Dublin.

I don't live too far from here and visited recently for the first time since it has been renovated and extremely impressive. I lovely coffee shop that offer light lunches, etc, and an excellent and very informative museum followed by a guided tour of the magnificent house. Well, it's worth a visit if you are in the area !

03/09/2024: Dianne is a lovely host and we have eaten there several times. I don't usually like buffets but for 18.50 per person find that very good value. Food keeps coming out fresh. Yes sometimes you have go wait for a couple of dishes to come out, but give me freshly cooked over food sat all night anyday.
11/08/2024: A family owned restaurant. Food is beautiful, very reasonably priced and served by a very friendly staff. Menu caters for all tastes.
