The Cottage Restaurant
08/05/2026: Dining at The Cottage with family was a wonderful experience
The staff and food were par excellence!
Go and enjoy if you happen to pass by - you won't be disappointed!
29/03/2026: Nice little restaurant. Service was great all round.
First course pรขtรฉ was the best I've had in a long time. The scallops were perfectly cooked, went well with everything else on the plate, and the roe was left on (ideal).
The lamb pastry and the crispy coconut rice dishes were very nice. The inconsistency in the size of the garnish on the rice was a bit weird though and felt unfitting.
Halibut dish was alright. Every element of the dish was amazing, except for the halibut itself. Just a bit plain and a bit overcooked for me.
Guinea fowl was lovely.
Poached pear dessert was amazing. The baked Alaska was world class.
Good portion sizes.
I see myself returning

Strokestown Park Museum Restaurant
Strokestown
19/12/2025: Glowing Review for Strokestown House and Gardens (With Victorian Xmas Experience added)
Nestled amidst the serene Irish countryside, Strokestown House and Gardens is an absolute gem, blending Victorian charm with modern sophistication. Our recent visit was nothing short of enchanting, as we embarked on a captivating Victorian photography tour guided by knowledgeable experts who transported us back in time with vivid anecdotes and historical insights within an actual time capsule of a lab.
Stepping into the impeccably preserved mansion, we were greeted by the elegant drawing room, exuding an air of timeless grace. The juxtaposition of antique furnishings and contemporary accents seamlessly merged the past with the present, setting the stage for an unforgettable experience. Under the guidance of Tony, Martin, and Aidan, whose expertise and unwavering support elevated our learning experience.
However, the highlight of our journey was the state-of-the-art conference room, a testament to Strokestown's commitment to innovation. Here, we delved into an AI image workshop, harnessing the power of cutting-edge technology with Midjourney software, in collaboration with Creative Heartlands.
We navigated through the intricacies of digital creativity, unlocking new realms of artistic expression.
Beyond the captivating surroundings and immersive activities, what truly sets Strokestown House apart is the warmth and hospitality extended by its dedicated staff. From the moment we arrived until our departure, every interaction was marked by genuine care and attentiveness, ensuring our comfort and satisfaction at every turn.
In essence, Strokesyown House and Gardens and Famkne Museum transcends the ordinary, offering a harmonious blend of history, innovation, and hospitality.
Whether you're seeking a journey through time or a sanctuary for creative exploration, this enchanting mansion promises an experience that lingers long after the visit concludes. The Park's House has been opened after an extensive refurbishment and it's spectacular.
The fairy woodland walk and Victorian Gardens are a treat, too.
The House now also boasts a cafe and gift shop with the entrance akin to that of a five-star hotel. The staff are courteous, knowledgeable, and extremely accommodating for families.
This year we had a wonderful time at the Victorian Santa Claus Experience. From start to finish it felt genuinely magical and very well organised.
Eilish handled the tour perfectly. She guided everyone smoothly to where they needed to be, kept everything on schedule, and was professional and warm throughout. It made a real difference to the experience, especially with families and excited children.
The elves were fantastic and fully in character, Santa was pure excellence, and Mrs Claus completely stole the show. She was engaging, funny, and memorable in the best possible way.
I would highly recommend this to any family looking for an authentic and thoughtfully put together Santa experience. It felt special, immersive, and genuinely festive.
Can't wait to go back again.
08/12/2025: Since a significant refurbishment, the cafe is a pleasure to visit.

Ardcarne Garden Cafe
19/05/2026: Just had two coffees and a scone today. Place was fine but have to say that I was dissapionted when charged an extra one euro for a small pot of hot water to add to the coffees, which were not very hot and I was charged an additional 50 cent for a very tiny portion of cream for the scone! The coffees and scone were already at the top price range
that I have paid for same anywhere and I feel that the extra charges were oportunistic and mean. I have never ever been charged for hot water with coffees before! Dissapointed to say the least!๐
05/05/2026: A lovely garden centre ๐ plenty variety of different plants ๐ชด and a nice place if you want something to eat

Hodson Bay Hotel
17/05/2026: Food was not great this time around. Second time staying and place has certainly aged since our last visit. However major let down on food. Chef wasn't happy with soup and sandwiches being order @12.30pm for lunch ๐คท๐ปโโ๏ธ then soup was given luke warm and soda bread on the side was still frozen. Sandwich orders were gotten wrong 2 times. Quality of what was supplied was sub par to say the least also.
Dinner in the bar was disappointing, cool temp chewy batter on fish! It was exchanged for fresher better cooked one but meant me and my partner were eating separately as his would have been cold if he had waited for mine.
17/05/2026: This is our 4th time here, never fails to please us everything location, the view of lake ree, the staff are extraordinary fabulous, always tried seat us at a window seat breakfast and bar food, the food amazing.
Our room we asked get changed to lake view cost a little more, but worth it, watched the swans from bed. Leaving tomorrow 9th April have booked come back September, love the pool Thankyou to the amazing Hodson Bay Hotel.

21/04/2026: Lovely staff here, truly. My service dog was very welcome, they had to check in the restaurant but it was no problem at all in the end. The staff was super sweet to her as well. Our room was comfortable and clean. For breakfast there's a menu to choose from. I had full irish on the first morning which was very tasty. On the second morning I had pancakes which were fluffy and not too sweet. Coffee and tea in the room which was great as well. Thanks for the lovely stay.
23/03/2026: Had sons confirmation there and we were made to feel unwelcome as staff just rushed everything out to us ..won't be going there again as some staff rolled eyes when asked for anything, family unfriendly atmosphere

The Moorings
Knockvicar
11/05/2026: Had a lovely meal there on a Sunday evening....beautiful spot, with a welcoming log burner and warm and friendly host Roger. The food was excellent...my friend ordered the meat platter which was ginormous and tasty...the generous portions of lasagne that my other friend and I had, were very satisfying after a boat trip out amongst the islands on Lough Key. Can't think of a better way to spend a sunny Sunday afternoon in May... highly recommend! Cheers!
03/03/2026: Unfortunately I'm unable to rate this venue as when we arrived it was closed. The bar is open but food is only served Thursday thru w/end. While we appreciate that customer is quiet this time of the year, it's not really too much to expect the information on line to be updated. So disappointed
