Townsend House in Birr

We’ve just returned after two really enjoyable days at Townsend House in Birr. The warmth, hospitality and comfort at Townsend House was truly five star. The breakfasts were brilliant and the tapas last night were gorgeous and served brilliantly. Well done to Martin and Lorraine and their staff.

Rooms were lovely and the garden was a fantastic quiet respite. Unfortunately our room was on the front and the traffic noise is horrendous. Our mates had a room in the back and said it was one of their best nights so I gave it 4 stars anyhow, but be sure not to take a room in the front. Also every pub and restaurant in town is closed on Wednesday and Thursday so we had to walk about a mile to a large hotel where we had a mediocre meal.

We went without reservation a Saturday evening. The waitress was nice and find us a place outside. The table was disgusting and we asked her if she could clean it but apparently no 😅 and left us with a non empty ashtray. Apart from that we found the food ok but very expensive for what you get. Even if the restaurant called itself "Tapas" , this is not. The idea is more like having starters. The atmosphere was lovely and the staff was nice. Not really good but not very bad

Such a great and affordable place to stay! The owners are lovely, and the breakfast is amazing. The staff is so kind. I hope to come back someday soon!
