Athlone town centre offers a mix of historic charm and modern shopping, with a strong emphasis on its location on the River Shannon. It is home to the 13th-century Athlone Castle and is a popular stop for tourists travelling between Dublin and Galway, who can enjoy pubs, restaurants, and boat hire on the river. For shopping, the Athlone Towncentre Shopping Centre is a major highlight, being the largest in the Midlands, with over 60 stores including popular brands like Zara, TK Maxx, and Marks & Spencer. The town is generally seen as clean and well-maintained, with a pedestrian-friendly area near the riverbanks.

Attractive town centre with a Christmas feeling. The light is warm and welcoming. Lots of stores to do your shopping and when you feel tired, you can spend the night at the Sheraton hotel which is within the Town centre. Toilets are located on the ground floor with multiple paid parking space. This town centre has more then 3 major exits to different streets around the Athlone Town.

Large centre with plenty of choice of stores including M&S. Wasn't overly busy on a Sunday afternoon. Plenty of parking.

Until now, I thought Athlone was just a main street with shopping centers and a few scattered restaurants.
But it turns out – it’s not! 😄
After visiting Sean’s Pub, the oldest pub in Ireland (and, as they say, one of the oldest in the world!), I realized that Athlone is a much more interesting town than it first appears.
Here stands Athlone Castle, dating back to the 12th century, when the town was an important strategic point on the River Shannon.
Today, it’s a cozy old town where history blends with good vibes, music, and delicious food. 🍻💚
