Gertie Brownes - what a divine place near the Shannon River in Athlone. Atmospheric pub and restaurant with a fab menu with choices to appeal to anyone. Our food was delicious, the service was friendly, the beer was spot on !! This quirky little place is so worth a visit and no matter which little nook and cranny you look at, you will find something to make you smile. For us, the icing on the cake is that Gertie's is pooch friendly so we will definitely be back. Gertie Brownes gets Minnie Mayhem's paw of approval !! 🐶🐾💞

What a gem! This was my first meal since getting to Ireland and I was blown away. A classic Irish pub experience with a cozy vibe, excellent and friendly service, and great food (the Guinness and leek sausages in my bangers and mash were some of the best sausages I've ever had!). If I'm ever back in Athlone, I will 100% come back here - I couldn't recommend it more.

Popped in on the way back to the train from Sean's Bar in Atlone, Ie. Sean's doesn't serve food. We had to figure it out as we were reliant on train & bus to get us back to the hotel. It was the last train out. Gertie's crew got us set up and a taxi got us to the train for a 20 minute late departure back to Dublin. Even so it all worked and located a bus to get us back, too. Were we to again we'd go earlier to visit the castle, too. So far some of the kindest, gracious people live in Ireland.

The Fatted Calf

26/11/2025: We had a wonderful evening at Fatted Calf. The ambiance was beautiful, and lovely background music played softly. The welcome was warm and inviting. The service was attentive, humorous, and never intrusive! The food was divine! The combination of the appetizer with the black pudding croquettes, the scallops, and the various sauces was an explosion of flavor! Thank you! For the main course, the meat was tender and juicy with a delicious chimichurri sauce. Wonderful! The desserts were simply amazing! Our restaurant visit was the highlight of our time here in Athlone!

Rustic roots restaurant

29/12/2025: The place is really cute and cosy, such a cosy spot to relax. The service was excellent, we felt very well looked after. The food is absolutely amazing! I loved the fish and chips, full of flavour, and the apple vinaigrette was such a lovely surprise — it went perfectly. The portion was generous and really satisfying.
13/12/2025: Food and service were excellent, cannot fault at all. Highly recommend.
