A pub with a great atmosphere and good service; it's fast if you're expecting it, i.e., on weekends. On Thursdays it's a bit slower, but still great.

On my last Friday night in Ireland, I arrived alone at JH & Sons to a large crowd both inside and out. I ordered a Guinness and found a spot to sit around back where there were three groups enjoying drinks and lively banter. Feeling somewhat out of place, I relocated to a stool at the end of one of two bars, next to where patrons were ordering drinks. I ordered a Beamish and occasionally engaged in brief conversation with those waiting on their drinks. The beers were exceptionally fresh and delicious. The crowd was expectedly boisterous and loud and the bartenders were quite busy. Rising above the din of the crowd was the recurrent laughter of assumably drunken female clientel - earily remiscent of the Wicked Witch of the West leaving on her broom. I was enjoying myself up until it was time for me to order my third pint. I had decided that I would have a Murphy's to complete my comparison of available Irish stouts. I don't quite know why, but I found it impossible to get the attention of either of the female bartenders. Patrons to my left and right were being served, but the bartenders chose to ignore me, and would not even make eye contact. I started to wonder what I had done to put them off. Was it my thick Brooklyn accent, or was it my NHL NY Rangers t-shirt? After what seemed like an eternity (15-20 min), a third bartender came over from the other bar and took my order. I drank my Murphy's (my favorite of the three) and left with the feeling that I was unwelcome.

We visited Cork last weekend from Manchester and were delighted to stumble on this pub on our first night. We spent a few nights here, sat outside watching the world go by and in one of the many snug corners inside listening to some good music. It had a great vibe and atmosphere and seemed to cater for all ages, regulars and visitors. The staff were very friendly and welcoming and helped point us in the right direction re our visit. The pub is really old and has some nice features, art and stained glass. We looked it up and saw a review where it was listed in the Telegraphs Top 100 pubs. We will definitely call in again next time we visit Cork. 💚

Montenotte Bistro

31/03/2026: Just had a wonderful break at the Montenotte, room was very comfortable and everything needed was available. Breakfast in the panorama lounge was delicious with beautiful views of the city. Drinks in the night overlooking the lights of Cork is wonderful. Staff are very attentive and friendly. The short walk downhill is easy to access the city and it's a very short uphill taxi back. We'll certainly return
25/03/2026: Off busy narrow street, so have a good navigation so you don't miss the entry like we did, as it was a bear to get back here. Otherwise, this has been the best hotel we have stayed while in Ireland so far. The staff and hotels attention to details are top notch. You should not be disappointed!

Joe's and Bros

13/12/2025: Just go there and enjoy gorgeous coffee and sandwiches, you won’t be disappointed! We were looking for a breakfast on a Saturday morning and my husband had walked passed a few times but it was always full. Now we know why. We absolutely loved our flat whites (in gorgeous ceramic mugs) and our 2 toasted sandwiches sitting in the little indoor space. We will be back!
01/12/2025: Always the best coffee! I always go for the Greek pot or the sausage roll, best in town. Also, they are so sound, treat everybody as regulars. Shoutout to Billy!
