Stopped in for a pint while hiking the Beara Way, The bartender was great, very friendly, nice to talk to, gave some good advice about that part of the peninsula. The other customers were friendly and made good conversation. MacCarthy's is exactly what an Irish pub should be.

Cracking wee pub and a lovely pint of Guinness. I met a lovely barwoman there who’s husband was a musician. If you ever read this it was a pleasure meeting you. I was the biker with the barwoman girlfriend :)

Like the words of the Christy Mooore song "we rambled in for a pint of stout" on Saturday evening around 5pm. We got a seat at the end of the bar, they used to have the meat slicer there up until Covid apprantely. Now its a lovely little seating area in the corner.
There was rugby on the TV and us being fans said we would stay and watch the game. South Africa were playing the All-Blacks. Strangely enough there was a chap sitting beside us at the end of the bar wearing a Sprinkboks jersey, we got talking to him about the match and a lot of other things during our visit there.
The owner of the bar Adrienne was lovely and welcoming and treated us to some locally grown grapes, they were sweet by the way but did not affect the taste of the Guinness. Adrienne told us that the bar was her great grandfathers and that it had passed down from Generation to Generation.
Anyway, we were about to leave when we were told that there was party on in the bar, it was part 2 of a 21st that had been held there on the Friday night for one of the bar staff, so we had to stay for a little while longer.
I could go on for hours about this fanstatic and welcoming bar in Castletownbere, a real gem in the West of Ireland, a pub that is owned by a family that are steeped in the most interesting history, a quick search on Google led to some fantastic reading.
We rolled out the door around 1am (I think) after a great session, singing and dancing and being made fell most welcome by the bar staff we met, Adrienne, Catherine and I cant remeber the young lads name. Also the local people who were there were so welcoming and warm, it was like we were lving there for years, epsecially the man in the Springboks jersey - Bobo the only man I know of who has been drinking Suothern comfort for 22 years.
We can't wait to return - absolutely wonderful!!!

Very nice staff, atmosphere, selection of drinks and great food. We were pleasantly surprised there was a vegan meal on the menu and it was delicious too. Can't recommended this pub enough.
