Rustic roots restaurant in Athlone

This was a great find when we visiting Athlone, Ireland. We had breakfast and it was delicious! The service was great. Oh!! but the music, the best tunes in Ireland.

We popped in for lunch because we read that the Irish stew was the move. I personally couldn't eat it because they put onions in it and I'm allergic, but my husband had the Irish stew that comes in a bread bowl and he absolutely loved it. He got so full, but already wanted to go back the next day to have it again. I had the steak and egg ciabatta sandwich and it was delightful! The steak and egg were cooked to perfection. Let us not forget the mashed potatoes that were also so good! I will say they should really let it be known that their menu changes for dinner because we showed up for dinner a couple days later excited to have it all again and they were like "Oh we stop serving that menu at 5PM" but yet it's not noted on the menus or anywhere in the restaurant so that was super disappointing and lowkey a bit frustrating. I would still highly recommend popping in for lunch though. You will not be disappointed :)

Do not order a steak, DO order the chowder starter. The rump was not close to 12oz, lacking flavour and a bit tough. The starter chowder was very filling, tasty, and would make a good main on its own. The dark bread is overly sweet and like a cake, ask for white bread which is also cakey but not sweet.

Lovely place to go out and have something small or something big my favourite is probably the pancakes 🥞
