Everything about this place was excellent. From the service, and banter from the staff. Portions were massive and food was prepared to a high standard. Will certainly be back when on our travels through Ireland.

I don't think I can recommend this place enough. Food is simple and absolutely delicious. Great choice as well for all preferences. Staff is lovely and the whole place feels like home. My only regret is I waited so long to pay a visit

After a proper Sunday stomp around Balrath Woods with my girlfriend and the young lad, we rolled into The Snailbox in the sort of condition normally reserved for Arctic explorers. Starving. Windswept. Emotionally prepared to eat the furniture if required.
And then… glory.
The place hits you straight away. Hats everywhere, cheeky little snail statues perched by the fireplace like they own the joint, and the whole pub buzzing with families demolishing plates of food with Olympic commitment. Electric is the only word for it. You can practically taste the anticipation in the air.
We kicked off with seafood chowder and garlic mushrooms. Now listen. This chowder wasn’t soup. It was a creamy, ocean-loaded declaration of intent. Thick, rich, steaming like a V8 engine on a cold morning, packed with seafood that tasted like it had signed off on the whole operation personally. The mushrooms arrived glistening in garlic butter, begging to be mopped up with bread like edible treasure. Civilisation peaked in that moment.
The young lad received his burger and chips and attacked it with the focus of a lion that hadn’t eaten since Tuesday. Juices running, chips crisp and golden, the whole thing disappearing at a rate that suggests we may need to consider a second mortgage once he’s a teenager.
For mains we shared the seafood hot pot and a beef curry. The hot pot was essentially chowder’s big, brawny cousin. A bubbling cauldron of creamy seafood excess that wrapped around your soul like a heated blanket. If you’re not hungry, be warned. This thing does not negotiate. It fills you to the point where walking becomes theoretical. The curry, meanwhile, was rich, warming, and deeply satisfying. The sort of dish that makes you pause mid-bite just to appreciate the fact you’re alive.
Service? Flawless. Staff moving with the precision of a pit crew, plates landing exactly when they should, smiles intact, chaos expertly disguised as choreography.
Everything about the meal screamed proper pub grub done right. Hearty. Generous. Unapologetically delicious.
Verdict: absolutely worth the drive. We left full, happy, and slightly stunned, like survivors of a very pleasant food ambush. And frankly, I’d do it all again tomorrow.

I’ve been coming here regularly, and the experience is always top-notch. The food is consistently delicious and never misses, and the staff truly goes above and beyond. Everyone is friendly, welcoming, and makes you feel right at home. It’s rare to find a place that’s this reliable in both food and service. Easily one of my favorite restaurants.
