The Mad Monk by Quinlans in Killarney

Excellent sea food restaurant. The bar man does a great espresso martini.

Dropped in without a booking in the early evening, mid week. Firstly I'd say the atmosphere scoring is because I was sat in between two tables of extremely loud tourists. There were several empty tables, but I understand that these could have been reserved for bookings shortly after my visit. Ordered the Squid (starter), gambas (starer), chips and a glass of Alberinio. The squid was tasty and cooked well. The salad that came with it was bland and sad. The gambas were tiny, maybe five prawns. They were overcooked, came sitting in far too much oil and the bread with it was stale. The chips were cooked well, but were lacking in salt. The alberinio was nice and served at the correct temp. Service was friendly, but a bit disjointed. Had to wait a while to order the bill and then pay the bill, please bring a card machine with the bill. Tbf there were two or three tables of tourists who appeared a bit demanding and needy, but maybe allow your bar person to collect payments when they're not busy, as was the case and they made eye contact with me numerous times while I was waiting to get the bill and then pay the bill. All in all, it was a bit meh for the price. I'd recommend to get their fried squid from their takeaway and save yourself a few quid, less hassle and far less loud and entitled and demanding tourists.

Good food but lacks some finesse. Not so visually appealing plates. Still a decent place. Tried the salmon, the monk fish and the seabass.

As a Neurodivergent person I found this place a little bit too noisy, because is an open-space with the open-kitchen so every noise sum and people has to talk louder and louder to listen each other. A part from that every think was very good 👌🏻

Never fails! Ryan was absolutely brilliant tonight. Black Sole is a must have and look forward to dining again soon.

I had an excellent salmon dish. The fish was cooked perfectly and the sauce, technically difficult, was delicious. Very pleasant and efficient service.

Unfortunately disappointed. Our server made us feel rushed from sitting us down through service. Upon bringing drinks to the table, our server slammed my wine glass down to the point where I was shocked it didn’t break. My husband ordered the fish and chips and had to send it back because there were bones in the fish (never have had this happen anywhere else). Overall, overpriced for the experience.
