Thyme in Athlone

Food was absolutely amazing from start to finish! Honestly one of the nicest meals we both ever had! We definitely recommend a visit. Lovely atmosphere & very friendly staff

Thyme restaurant is tucked down a little lane on the opposite side of the river Shannon from Athlone castle and it is a fantastic little spot. The food and presentation is beautiful, the attention to detail on each plate is a feast for the eyes and the flavours are a wonderful combination and best of all its all from local irish produce. There is a wonderful team of friendly, very well trained staff. The restaurant is painted in a dark green that adds to the welcoming atmosphere along with all the happy diners.

Lovely food and experience at Thyme. Decent wine menu and seasonal dishes. First two courses (amuse Bouche and bread) were tasty but felt there could have been a bit more going on. Staff were great and very knowledgable and food came out fairly quick.

Average, style over substance. The tartlet needed more salt. The woodpigeon was disappointing. I had only ever had it pink not as part of an apricot and walnut ballotine. It was overcooked? dry and didn't taste nice. The beef fillet was perfectly cooked but there wasn't enough beef cheek. The liquorice and rhubarb was delicious but I did think it would have been better if the rhubarb had been cooked a little more and was more tender. Initially the service was rushed.

Very expensive but worth it if you have the money. Woodpigeon as a starter was very rich in flavour and tastefully decorated. The rib eye beef was melt in the mouth and had a delicious gravy along with a big Yorkshire pudding. The chocolate souffle was also amazing, really warm and had caramel inside of it. Also they somehow made popcorn flavoured ice cream. Would recommend.

Had an early dinner here , restaurant nicely busy when we arrived. Warm and friendly staff, service excellent. As for the food, delicious and perfect. Congratulations to the kitchen team who let us enjoy such amazing combinations and tastes . Good wine list . I can only advise you go and book as quickly as possible. I’m rarely in Athlone but I may make it my business to arrange a visit here .
