Glenlo Abbey Hotel & Estate

Galway
03/05/2024: Awkward experience. Brought my mother for afternoon tea as I had bought her a voucher as a birthday gift online from the website that stated, "Afternoon tea for two." The afternoon tea was lovely, a bit eerie as we were the only ones in the entire dining area at the time. Then it came to leaving. The waitress informed us that as the prices have gone up that we had to pay the difference between the voucher and the "new price" for this service. I explained that the voucher online stated it was for afternoon tea for two and didn't expect that we would have to pay an additional almost 30/40 euros on top of what I had already paid for. She said they increased the price of the service sincw and that she was being made by management to charge people the difference. She was extremely apologetic and stated multiple times how much she hated to do this to customers and that it was a joke, which, to be quite honest, I agree. Felt bad for the waitress as she was genuinely embarrassed and uncomfortable knowing that it was wrong. Very uncomfortable experience and left a bad taste in my mouth. I definitely didn't feel like a 5-star experience. I wasn't going to say anything until I went to book afternoon tea again in another establishment for my mother's annual gift. It's a pity that this has to be the memory that has been taken from this experience.
27/03/2024: The Glenlo Abbey hotel is quite fancy, maybe too fancy for this more simple guy. Everything was very formal, reservations suggested for dinner and breakfast. We did have dinner in the “casual” restaurant as it was clear we were not their formal type to dine in the rail car restaurant. We were given a free drink for the lounge and ended up sitting for two drinks. The bartender was attentive and friendly. Dinner was tasty and comparably priced. Now comes the breakfast dilemma. We were strongly advised to have a reservation for breakfast as it is popular. We had a 9:00 reservation and arrived on time. Once finally seated, it took 15 minutes for the coffee to arrive. We attempted the baked goods and typical fare at the buffet area as we waited for them to come for our order. The buffet area was not well supplied with plates empty and nobody seemed to be attending to refilling the plates. Our order was finally taken at 9:29 when we were about to leave. Observation and commentary of other guests clearly showed that some work needs to be done on how they manage breakfast. I did write to their general email address early in the day, but never heard back.
