The Long Valley in Cork

Finally got to get a sandwich here. Finally got a little corner table inside. On previous visits I've been relegated to standing outside or standing in the way of others, but you can see why it's popular. Everyone who worked here had a good vibe about them, the taplist is vast and caters for all, and the food was coming out like a well oiled machine - efficient, hearty, consistent. I'd come back and stand, happily. But I'm glad I got to get in early and see it step into gear as Sunday got off the ground. Will remain one of my favourites in Cork.

We came to this bar 10 years ago as we were given information that visitor books to view going back decades were there and we found one which my husbands family had completed in 1970. It was so emotional seeing comments from people who had since passed away and also that he completed as a young child. We made a trip back in March this year to bring my Father in laws ashes back and wanted to update the old visitor book but was told “they’ve gone”. Literally that nothing else by someone who wasn’t the least bit interested in why we were there. Sometimes people have good reasons for asking about something and a degree of understanding in what is a very historic city wasn’t too much to ask. We had lunch and the sandwiches are lovely and well made but the 3 stars reflect the sadness we felt when we left .

Something smelled bad when we walked in. The bar seemed excellent otherwise but it was too much for the women I was with. So we hobbled a bit down to another pub.

As a proud Corkman who lives only 10 minutes away, I’m almost embarrassed to admit that today was my first time eating in the Long Valley. I’d tried a few times before, but it was always packed—which says a lot about the place. I’m delighted I finally made it in. The food was excellent, the portions were generous, and the staff were friendly, welcoming and professional. To top it all off, the bill was incredibly reasonable for the quality and amount of food. It’s easy to see why this place has such a great reputation. A proper Cork institution that’s well worth a visit. I’ll definitely be back—those sandwiches have more than earned their reputation as some of the best in Cork.

If you are ever in Cork city, you have to drop into the long valley it's like a right of passage experiencing their famous door step sandwich 🥪, every time I go there I always have the Corned beef salad sandwich, taste and enjoy
