The best restaurants in Monaghan

20/09/2025: Only if there was a negative star as an option to put . We did the reservation for 8 pm on Saturday in September. I went with my family and had to wait for around 20 mins. However, when we got the table, there was no menu card provided, and no one asked for anything. After waiting for 15 mins, my father-in-law asked one of waiters to give the menu card . We did the order, and got the starters. Next, thing , we didn't know that for the main course, we have to wait for around an hour. So, I am not sure if the service was slow or they have lack of cook/ chef in the kitchen. One hour for the main course and when it got served, none of us were particularly impressed by our orders. In the end, we asked for the bill and seems they "realized" their mistake, a complimentary dessert was offered for the table without any apology or any kind of talk. Not even once, during the waiting, anyone asked if we want any drink or anything. Tbh, it was a poor experience this time, given my in-laws have been there in the past and they can feel the difference this time. I am not sure if I should recommend this place. So, I will only say, go at your own risk and see, you might get lucky😄.

14/06/2025: Wishing David all the best, was passing through Monaghan twice a week in the 90’s heading to Cavan to see a young lady, was always told to get a supreme + a spicy tomato on the way through .Courting for 10 years…. cost me a fortune ! We’re married 26 years now, but anytime we’re heading up to Cavan, the wee treat was Pizza D’or GUTTED !!!!!!!!

26/04/2025: Great place to stop off after the Saturday parkrun beside the fairies too 🧚 Best ever bacon bap and cuppa highly recommend shame it’s 2 hours from home. almost forgot the bench is heated!!

13/05/2025: Lovely gift shop, great coffee and lovely staff. The cakes are decent, too, and they’re doggy friendly. May not always get parking directly outside but will often get something a short walk away.

09/09/2025: Awesome is a gem in the heart of Carrickmacross, serving coffee from expert roaster (roasts coffee in house), delicious bakes and always a kids hot chocolate for the little ones. Staff are top class, in a town where there is no shortage of coffee shops, this one stands out.

12/07/2025: Had the most amazing experience at the Sliabh Beagh Hotel. Everyone from the servers to the bar staff and office staff were exceptional, most friendly people you could meet. The food was out of this world (amazing chef). The rooms were comfortable and well stocked. The locals made you feel very welcome. Had an amazing time, dad meeting up with nieces who he hadn't see in years. Will be returning shortly. Thanks all for the amazing experience of Sliabh Beagh

07/06/2025: Went for lunch with my 97 year old mum and my sister . It certainly is a 5 star restaurant with excellent food, and amazing staff. If you haven’t been you need to check it out ❤️

24/05/2025: I have eaten in this restaurant several times when I visit from London. Sadly the quality of the food is very poor.? Has the chef changed? I had chicken fillet burger. The batter was dark brown and rock hard. The chips are frozen and there was a tasteless limp salad on the side. Very disappointing.

29/08/2025: We stayed a couple of nights here and enjoyed being in Carrick. The rooms were very nice but left down by two elements. Firstly, during fairly warm summer weather they were extremely hot with no ability to fully open the windows. Secondly, the shower was very hot and extremely difficult to alter the temperature due to a very stiff control tap - this was the case in multiple rooms (we knew other people staying here) and is something they need to sort out. Breakfast was generally good but could have done with at least some vegetarian options. Service was pleasant and the reception staff were particularly good.

16/07/2025: A lovely little spot that my partner and I visited for breakfast. It was quiet and the staff were quick to serve us. The breakfast menu has a nice collection of breakfast stables with something for everyone. We each had a Pancake Stack. Mine with Berries, Compote, Greek Yogurt and Honey. My partner's with Bacon, Maple Syrup and Pecans. The Coffee was good and fresh. Would definitely recommend this spot and we will certainly be back again.

15/07/2025: Went to this place because it used to be great for food. Unfortunately I have no idea of whether it still is because we left starving. After ordering we sat down after 40mins later still no sign of food coming. After enquiring as to where our order was the young girl looked bewildered and looked around there was our order on the ledge behind us. With the added accompaniment of flies I just couldn't being myself to wait any longer. If you value your life please don't go there.

30/09/2025: Sourdough didn't taste fresh, near impossible to cut after toasting. Really strange texture of avocado, like gritty and tasteless. Must have hit a bad day as locals recommended and reviews are great.
