Misunderstood Heron
06/05/2026: I got TMH as caterers for my wedding in the Killary Lodge and the food was gorgeous, such great value and there was so much provided! The chefs were lovely and efficient. They did charcuterie, dinner, desserts and breakfast the next day, every thing was beautiful.
27/04/2026: Made one of our better decisions when we decided to kill a sunny Sunday morning by renting electric bikes in Westport and cycling the thirty odd minutes out to Misunderstood Heron for a bite to eat.
I had heard tantalising tales of this mythical spot, counted among the best food trucks not only in the entire country but on the entire planet, and had made my peace that Reinaldo & Kim’s food may not pass these lips. That’s because they were recently evicted from their ancestral home overlooking Killary fjord by a certain County Council that shall remain nameless, seemingly bereft of decency, common sense, and tastebuds.
Praise be that Misunderstood Heron did not have far to fly before finding a new home, out the back of Campbell’s pub in Murrisk. Nested in the shadow of Ireland’s holy mountain with majestic views over Clew Bay, the Heron food truck is now welcoming a new type of pilgrim to Croagh Patrick.
We were particularly blessed - on the day we chose for our pilgrimage, Reinaldo had the parilla grill and smoker on the go - and a special BBQ platter was on offer, with one skewer of succulent, chargrilled chicken pieces with orange & rosemary, and another skewer of pork neck with a chilli & coffee mole that was nothing short of heavenly.
The holy trinity of the ridiculously flavourful cut of meat, smothered in the love that is a true mole, and all expertly choreographed above the dancing flames and hot charcoals, is enough to bring anyone to their knees. Don’t even get me started about the hay-smoked potatoes.
Ok, ok. You got me started. I mean, I have eaten my fair share of potatoes, but I’ve never had a hay-smoked potato. Now I wonder will I ever want them any other way? But it didn’t even stop there, they were also bathed in seaweed butter! I know! I tend to leave my favourite ingredient on the plate where it receives the dubious honour of being the last, lingering taste of a great meal as it slides into my belly. I can honestly say this was the first time the humble potato outlasted barbecued pork neck to take the win.
For any of you that made it this far, both in terms of getting to Misunderstood Heron and this far down this review, in case Reinaldo doesn’t have the BBQ fired up for your visit, fear not: the regular menu is also worth me waxing evangelical for a bit.
Eyes bigger than bellies and conscious it might be a while before we’re back here, we also ordered a bowl of the freshest, Killary fjord mussels, swimming in a slightly spicy, and very sumptuous sauce. We were probably blessed that the beef shin flatbreads were off the menu or we would have ordered that as well and there’d have been scant chance of anyone cycling back to Westport.
But we left with full bellies, had a bracing douse at the beautiful nearby Bertra Beach and then bicycled our way back to get on the train, where I’m slowly starting to make myself hungry again writing this review. These are the sacrifices we make.
I hope someone finds this review useful. I certainly can’t wait to come back.

Fingers crossed we see the restaurant again soon but for now, a charming wine shop with some snacks. Thank you
