There were five of us, one of whom wanted to eat vegan.
We received a warm welcome, wonderful service, and enjoyed excellent food and exceptionally good wine.
The vegan option was equally delicious and very creative overall.
Highly recommended! đđŸđđđ

Every sauce, purĂ©e, glaze, and marinade was impeccable. The textures and flavors were beautiful. Honestly best meal we have had in Ireland and weâve been traveling the country for two weeks now. Absolute compliments to the chief đ

We had a fantastic family dinner at House of Plates in Castlebar and it exceeded our expectations. From the moment we arrived, the restaurant had a warm, intimate atmosphere that immediately made for a relaxed and enjoyable evening. The dining room is beautifully presented and strikes a perfect balance between being elegant without feeling overly formal.
The food was undoubtedly the highlight of the evening. Every dish was beautifully presented with real attention to detail, and the flavours throughout the meal were exceptional. You can tell there is genuine care and creativity behind every plate. We especially loved the baked cod, which was cooked perfectly and packed with flavour, and the steak, which was tender, rich and expertly prepared. The scallops were outstanding, cooked beautifully and complemented by fantastic accompaniments, while the duck was another memorable course that everyone at the table thoroughly enjoyed. Every member of our family commented on how much they loved their meal, which says a lot when everyone orders something different.
One thing that really stood out was the generosity. The portion sizes were excellent, particularly considering the quality of the food. We were also pleasantly surprised by the thoughtful chefâs treats that arrived throughout the meal, adding an extra touch of luxury and making the whole experience feel special. The additional side dishes served with the mains were another unexpected bonus that we hadnât anticipated and were very much appreciated.
The wine pairings listed on the menu deserve a special mention. They were exceptionally well chosen and complemented each course perfectly, enhancing the flavours without overpowering them. Itâs clear that a lot of thought has gone into creating a complete dining experience rather than simply serving great food.
The value for money is remarkable. A menu offering two courses for âŹ55 or three courses for âŹ62 is incredibly competitive considering the quality of the ingredients, the presentation, the additional chefâs surprises and the overall standard of cooking. It genuinely feels like youâre receiving a fine dining experience at a very fair price.
If I was to offer any constructive feedback, it would only be on a couple of very small points. The lamb was slightly more cooked than we would have preferred, and while all of the staff were polite, the two younger members of the team could perhaps bring a little more enthusiasm and warmth to the service. These were very minor observations and certainly didnât take away from what was otherwise a wonderful evening.
Overall, House of Plates is a fantastic addition to Castlebarâs dining scene. Exceptional food, beautiful presentation, generous portions, excellent wine pairings, thoughtful little extras throughout the meal and outstanding value for money all combine to create a memorable dining experience. We left already talking about what weâd order on our next visit, which is always the best sign. I wouldnât hesitate to recommend House of Plates to anyone looking for a special meal, and weâll definitely be back.

Ate here for the second time and it was somehow even better than my first visit.
The food is spectacular and varied with lots of little details to enjoy and savour.
Incredibly friendly service and loads of little touches that make you smile.
It's also very reasonably priced even with drinks so you really feel that you're getting your moneys worth.
Would happily eat here again

Just WOW! This was a beautifully surprising experience start to finish.
I was fortunate to get in for a booking on the same day, though I would definitely recommend prebooking. It is a preset menu, yet I would say the most incredible quality and presentation you could ever hope to get for the price. (This offering was 2 courses for âŹ55, 3 courses for âŹ62). Aoife was delightful through the entirety of the service, beginning with her spot-on recommendations and tastings of wine to select my bottle.
The chef's snack started off with an impressive bang- sustainable use of "scraps" made into a delicious mouse, cradled within a parm crisp and served on a bed of smoked pine. Absolutely stunning! I'll honestly be thinking about this bite for a long while.
It was followed by one of the most tasty bread courses I've ever had--honey rosemary bread (I've got to figure out how to recreate at home) with salted Irish butter, olive oil and an elderberry balsamic vinegar. I could've honestly only eaten that and still been happy!
Next was a cheese souffle with leek fondue which was decadent and flavorful.
My main course was a 12 hour cooked featherblade of Irish beef that didn't even require a knife. The unexpected toppings of black garlic, maple bacon and BBQ crisps were creative and deliciously unique. The sides were of generous portions- a potato mash with greens, fresh mixed veg and braised carrots and an impressive stacked and fried potato.
The palate cleanser of a raspberry and lemon lolli-popcicle was a delightfully refreshing treat to finish it off. I took my dessert to-go of a dense, dark chocolate cake with raspberry.
Gorgeous meal, I honestly had so much to take away after (including half the bottle of wine I didn't finish). Aoife was sweet enough as well to send me with recommendations for my visit and I expect her suggestions will be spot on. Overall, I consider this a tremendous value for the quality, experience and service and I would be thrilled to return! Thank you!
