Captain House Restaurant

Tullamore
07/07/2025: Such a lovely place! The owner is kind and very welcoming, and the food is absolutely fantastic. We ordered calamari and chips, pear and blue cheese salad, seabass, and seafood pasta with a bottle of Riesling. Everything was heavenly delicious and beautifully presented. No matter what you choose, you can't go wrong. Our only regret is not discovering this gem sooner, before our time in Tullamore comes to an end.

Blue Apron

Tullamore
27/06/2025: Ohhh how nice you are away from everything, we are always in action
21/06/2025: Wow! Simply blown away by the fantastic food and awesome service. We had the special Beef Wellington and seafood platter - both magnificent. The beef just melted in your mouth, the pastry was flaky and crunchy. The accompanying vegetables were cooked perfectly; the recommended wine was also a perfect match. The cauliflower and cheese balls were incredibly flavoursome, the salad divine - we squeezed in dessert which was pavlova - as an Aussie, we know pavlova and this was exceptional. Seriously could not fault anything at all, well worth a visit. Nearly forgot to mention the bread which is all made on the premises. You can tell when food is made with love and care; this is the best we’ve had in Ireland.

01/08/2025: Great local unique spot - good for a detour to admire the murals and decor.
24/07/2025: Love this place, it's got an amazing community atmosphere. Great food, coffee, art on the walls and good tunes. In an increasingly gentrified Dublin we need places like this.

Brewery Tap

Tullamore
13/07/2025: Great Spot for a Work Night Out! Went to Brewery Tap in Tullamore with some work friends and had a brilliant time. The service was excellent – really friendly and attentive without being overbearing. We had a nice big table, which was perfect for the group, and the atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming. Drinks were great, with a solid selection to choose from, and the nachos were especially tasty – perfect for sharing. All in all, a really enjoyable evening. Would definitely recommend for a casual night out with friends or colleagues!

Killeens Pub

Shannonbridge
27/07/2025: **Absoutely the best food founs during recent 7 day Cross Ireland Roadtrip** An off-the-beaten-path gem! Simply amazing food, friendly service, and unique environment. The brown sauce is to die for, made with locally brewed Seven Churches Whiskey. Locally sourced beef and other ingredients. Recommended from the tour guide at Tullamore DEW distillery. Truely an unforgettable experience! And plenty of parking out back, too!
09/07/2025: Best dog friendly pub around. Great atmosphere, food and service. A water bowl for the dog is the first thing they do after you're seated down. And they don't put you out the back if you have a doggy with you. Truly dog friendly! They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. Pre booking is recommended for dinner at weekends.

13/07/2025: Don't want to run the place down but €21.00 for a small amount of roast beef and a couple of scopes of potato was a bit much...wouldn't be in a hurry to go back unfortunately.
04/07/2025: Genuine hospitality and exceptional food in a 340-year-old thatched-roof pub, warmly run through the sixth and seventh generation family.

Courtyard Cafe at Birr Castle

Birr
12/07/2025: Very beautiful and big park for relaxation and walking. This is one of those places you should visit in Ireland. Also, this castle and areas are good for photo sessions.
10/07/2025: This was a visit to the 🏰. We'd a young lady called Sylvia, who's very knowledgeable about the 🏰 & grounds. she took us on a guided tour, altho you don't have to go for the tour, you can take yourselves around the grounds & look for yourself. the tour lasted about 90 minutes, a few of us had to stop, cause the walking was a bit much & there's no where to sit on the tour & I didn't see many round where we went. there's so many trees in the grounds, 1 of the very big trees is around 4/500 years old, the only way to know is to cut it down, which they don't want to do, obviously. 😄 it's an enormous place to be kept going, I'm sure she said how many grounds keepers were there, but I xant remember 😅 but there's 4? staff in the 'big' house. we're given time to walk back to the café where our driver (local community guard was waiting) some of the ladies wanted to see the gardens & flowers, unfortunately they couldn't get in to see the flowers, 😪 we split up, on the way back, some ladies were more agile, some of us took advantage of a seat on the way back. all in all it's a lovely place to visit, I'm sure it'd take a couple of days, to really walk the grounds. we're shown the biggest telescope that 1 of the Earls made for his interstellar We had a fascinating visit to the castle! 🌟 Sylvia's guided tour was very informative and engaging. The castle's grounds are very impressive, with those ancient trees being a highlight. 🌳 It's great that they're preserving them for future generations. The lack of seating during the tour might have been a bit challenging for some us, but it's lovely that we could take breaks and enjoy the scenery at your own pace. The gardens and flowers seemed like a lovely addition, though it's a shame some of the ladies couldn't access them. The telescope was an interesting piece of history! 🔭 In the early 1840’s, the Third Earl of Rosse designed and built the largest telescope in the world - The Great Telescope (also known as The Leviathan of Parsonstown). With this telescope, he discovered the spiral nature of galaxies, and from 1845-1914 this remained the largest telescope in the world! Standing at an impressive 72 feet long with a mirror measuring 6 feet in diameter, (there were 2 mirrors, so that when one mirror was being cleaned they had one spare theyd use, the telescope was not just a scientific instrument, but a symbol of human curiosity and innovation, built using cutting-edge engineering techniques of its time. I wouldn't like to have been 1 of the men having to hand turn the telescope, for the earl. 😆 when the telescope was refurbished they tried to salvage anything they could from the 🔭 & surrounding walls were taken apart, fixed & put together with the original pieces, they'd to change some bits. The bricks of the walls surrounding the 🔭 were numbered, taken out of the wall, cleaned & put back in the same place it'd have been taken out off!!! Overall, the castle is a wonderful place to explore, and it would take a couple of days to fully appreciate the grounds. 😊
