House of plates
Castlebar legal
10/07/2026: We had a fantastic family dinner at House of Plates in Castlebar and it exceeded our expectations. From the moment we arrived, the restaurant had a warm, intimate atmosphere that immediately made for a relaxed and enjoyable evening. The dining room is beautifully presented and strikes a perfect balance between being elegant without feeling overly formal.
The food was undoubtedly the highlight of the evening. Every dish was beautifully presented with real attention to detail, and the flavours throughout the meal were exceptional. You can tell there is genuine care and creativity behind every plate. We especially loved the baked cod, which was cooked perfectly and packed with flavour, and the steak, which was tender, rich and expertly prepared. The scallops were outstanding, cooked beautifully and complemented by fantastic accompaniments, while the duck was another memorable course that everyone at the table thoroughly enjoyed. Every member of our family commented on how much they loved their meal, which says a lot when everyone orders something different.
One thing that really stood out was the generosity. The portion sizes were excellent, particularly considering the quality of the food. We were also pleasantly surprised by the thoughtful chef’s treats that arrived throughout the meal, adding an extra touch of luxury and making the whole experience feel special. The additional side dishes served with the mains were another unexpected bonus that we hadn’t anticipated and were very much appreciated.
The wine pairings listed on the menu deserve a special mention. They were exceptionally well chosen and complemented each course perfectly, enhancing the flavours without overpowering them. It’s clear that a lot of thought has gone into creating a complete dining experience rather than simply serving great food.
The value for money is remarkable. A menu offering two courses for €55 or three courses for €62 is incredibly competitive considering the quality of the ingredients, the presentation, the additional chef’s surprises and the overall standard of cooking. It genuinely feels like you’re receiving a fine dining experience at a very fair price.
If I was to offer any constructive feedback, it would only be on a couple of very small points. The lamb was slightly more cooked than we would have preferred, and while all of the staff were polite, the two younger members of the team could perhaps bring a little more enthusiasm and warmth to the service. These were very minor observations and certainly didn’t take away from what was otherwise a wonderful evening.
Overall, House of Plates is a fantastic addition to Castlebar’s dining scene. Exceptional food, beautiful presentation, generous portions, excellent wine pairings, thoughtful little extras throughout the meal and outstanding value for money all combine to create a memorable dining experience. We left already talking about what we’d order on our next visit, which is always the best sign. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend House of Plates to anyone looking for a special meal, and we’ll definitely be back.

07/06/2026: Absolutely beautiful meal, everything was perfectly done and presented very well.
The service was impeccable.
It was lovely to see such a well-coordinated team, all committed to delivering excellent hospitality.
Highly recommend!
07/06/2026: We ordered today the prawn salad and one of the daily’s specials. It was delicious. The service was great (Raphael the head of the waitress recommended us those two dishes). Really great, obliging and friendly service!
We can definitely recommend it!!
The surrounding was nice and not too loud.
Great work gluten-free options (at least 70% of the menu) as well.

14/07/2026: What a wonderful evening! My friend from Westport invited me here, and I was genuinely impressed. The food was outstanding from start to finish. I chose the special of the day – halibut with a lobster bisque – and it was absolutely delicious. I especially loved that they even brought me an extra jug of the bisque, which was such a lovely touch.
The starter was equally delicious: perfectly cooked scampi served on a fresh salad.
The restaurant itself is quite small, which gives it a warm, intimate atmosphere. I felt very comfortable throughout the evening, and the service was friendly and attentive.
If I’m back in Castlebar, I will definitely come here again. Highly recommended!
03/07/2026: We picked Dinning Room as a restaurant for our small wedding meal. From the start Shirley was so accomodating with times, they designed a custom menu especially for our occasion which was a lovely touching gesture. The food was amazing every dish tasted amazing from the bread to starters, mains and desserts. Staff were lovely and kind, very professional. The restaurant itself is a lovely small intimate place great for a special occasion to celebrate. Lovely touch also from Kevin taking time to come out and talk to us. Lovely people, beautiful restaurant and the most amazing food.

31/01/2026: This is were all the cool kids go... of course I noticed it was the kids of the 90s. The best generation, But still cool nonetheless.
A great bar with some great cool hide away tables. This allows for decent chats and socialising, not provided by Bridge St, you have to bring your own.
Normally Irish bars have live bands, no shade as the kids say. But sometimes you want a bar with a great selection of drinks and to be able to speak to the people on your table. This is the place.
Staff are friendly and intuitive, not leaving you thirsty. Also there is a great outdoor area which allows for eating. There is even a food truck that parks right up to the outside tables. So there isn't much of a walk for a take away pint and meal. Also if you prefer other takeaway places, they all say that you can eat their food there too. The outside place is sheltered, but I wouldn't like to test it during a downpour.

29/07/2026: They need floor staff, tables full of cups etc. Also free tables are dirty need a wipe.
And it's gone 2.30pm not busy.
The teacake I got was rock hard, changed to a scone, and staff didn't care.
29/06/2026: Below average food selection, excellent staff though but the worst part is the actual establishment. It looks nice and inviting but the accoustics makes sitting there a horrific experience. The place wasn't even busy at the time i was there (1pm on a Monday) and there was perhaps 15 other customers at the time. Rhen accoustics make it so that you can hear every single conversation going on in the room, including the staff taking orders, but it all just turns into noise. Every sound echos around the room. They really need to put some sound dampeners in the ceiling or something. Some textile curtains or screens would do the trick as well.

01/07/2026: Whilst taking the order on phone for collection, was cut off, also they were shouting at someone whilst taking order. Food ready on time, when we opened it no serviettes, no fork for garlic cheese chops, no ketchup, no salt and no dip for the garlic bread pizza. Alot of black chips and barely warm.
30/06/2026: Good food helpful friendly staff
