12/12/2024: Had an amazing pizza here in “ Ocras “ Newtowncunnigham called La Bella Donna. Base thin n crispy with fresh toppings. Fantastic bag of chips doused in salt & vinegar. A credit to ace owner/chef, Joe Cannon from Gortahork. Newtown has struck gold having a guru pizzeria of this calibre.

08/05/2025: Formal Complaint: Hi there, I would like to lodge a formal complaint against your manager Mark Doherty. On May 2nd, I hired the function room in the back of backstage bar and grill for a surprise birthday celebration for my Fiance. When I called to book the function room a week in advance, I asked the individual price per person for the function menu, which was E29.95, and had to pay a deposit of E40, which would be taken off the final bill. I had a total number of 20 people for the meal, which would come to a total of E599 - E40 = E559 (E27.95/pp) Unfortunately, some of my guests could not make the dinner, but still wanted to contribute to the surprise. Upon arriving, I pulled one of the servers aside and kindly asked if she could discreetly put E100 towards the final bill of E559, which would bring the new total to E459 (E22.95/pp). This individual price is the price I told my guest the 3-course meal would cost. To my surprise, the waitress said she would not be able to do this, and then proceeded to ask if we would be paying individually or all together. I mentioned individually, and she mentioned she would not be able to do this and that she would have to grab a manager. When we entered the function room, we came into the room with no lights and no music on. We asked multiple times for the music to be turned on, and when it was finally turned on, it was turned to full volume. Once the manager came into the function room, in front of all my guests, he advised me rudely that they do not do split bills. I asked to speak to him privately in the hall as this was a matter I wanted handled discreetly. I told Mark that not once before now was I made aware of the bills being paid individually, and that it would be unfair to spring this on my guests now. He mentioned that it would have been communicated with me via the confirmation emails as well as is on all the menus. I again asked him if we could please pay individually, to which again he said no. I then proceeded to say that I work in hospitality and know they can do this, but they are choosing not to. I told him I was not impressed with the hospitality of this restaurant at all and that from the moment we walked in, they had been nothing but rude to us. Upon going back to my group, I was nearly in tears. Something was meant to be a nice surprise, turned into an evening leaving a sour taste in our mouths. My guests were shocked at how rude Mark was to me in front of everyone. I asked all my guests if they would be able to pay me up front as we had just been advised that split bills were not possible. Upon returning home, I went through all the emails and have looked at all the menus to find this was not the case, and that indeed I was never advised of the total bill. I left very disappointed in this restaurant. As someone who works in customer service and hospitality, this, to me, was a prime example of how not to handle your guests. When a guest hires a function room, the staff should be friendly, and the atmosphere should be set before the first person walks in. The fact that the music, and lights were not on, and we were NOT made aware of group billing, were not impressionable factors. Neither my guests nor I will be returning to Backstage bar and grill, and be assured that many people will be told of the terrible customer service received. The only positive note, was our server Sarah.

06/05/2025: We ordered their menu A option for a family event. We hadn't to do anything. They included plates, cutlery wrapped in napkins and the water for the ban Marie's. Food arrived early and piping hot. They also told us to just scarpe plates/containers and they would collect all the following day. Nikki arranged all this for us and she was so attentive and helpful prior to the event. Thanks so much.

24/05/2025: Great selection of drinks, chia latte 😋 and capochino with coconut milk was top class👏 🤩 . Clean place with great atmosphere and lively serving staff. The food looks great, and all plates returning to the kitchen were licked clean. Will definitely return

16/04/2025: First timers and 3 generations had a bite to eat here after over 2 hours in Tropical World. We had cooled down whilst waiting for the children to run themselves ragged in the covered but outdoor play area. On entering the cafe, it was warm and inviting until we spotted people leaving a table and went to make a move to get it and were informed of the queuing system for a table by a staff member and a couple in front of us who would get the table. We waited probably about 5 minutes for another table to be vacated: it felt quite long with 2 children aged 6 and under who were hopping from one foot to the other. In the meantime, we ordered a latte €3.50, cappuccino €3.50, 2 fruit shoots (€1.50 each), one chocolate brownie €3, one coffee cake €3 and a slice of lemon meringue €4.95. Coffees and tray bakes were very good but star of the show was the lemon meringue which was DIVINE. Overall, I thought here was quite reasonable given the climate. We thawed out, warmed up and got our sugar hit and rolled out of here. We would return maybe for some quiche next time and definitely some lemon meringue 🍋😋.

04/05/2025: We love this place. The girls who work there always come and have a chat with us and our kids. The gluten free menu is big! The milkshakes are good. The staff are sound. And the cajun chicken wrap is tasty!
