The best restaurants in Athlone

12/11/2025: We spent the night in Athlone on a whim and stumbled upon Roots. We had a wonderful evening with incredibly delicious food, good drinks and very friendly service. If we ever find ourselves back in Ireland and Athlone, we will definitely be back!

10/11/2025: It's not big, the food is hot and tasty. The prices are reasonable. But we didn't feel comfortable there, like in many other restaurants in Ireland.

12/11/2025: Really good food and service. Government guidelines well adhered to. Would highly recommend.

11/08/2025: Went here on the recommendation of a friend, I ordered Chicken supreme with champ, my wife got chicken curry, I got the smallest chicken breast I have ever seen and the bed of champ wasn't that large either and was just Luke warm. I said to the water, but nothing was done about it. My wife asked for Garlic bread instead of the pitta bread,And when we got the bill we were charged €2 extra. We will not be returning 😒

04/12/2025: I ordered a Veg Biryani for takeaway and received it in no time. As for the food — both the quality and quantity were outstanding. I’ve never had such a good biryani in Ireland before, where quality and quantity come together so perfectly. ( Veg Biriyani🙂)

20/11/2025: Spice India Athlone turned out to be a good culinary experiences. The moment you walk in, you’re greeted with warm hospitality and the comforting aroma of coconut, curry leaves, and freshly ground spices—the unmistakable essence of Kerala cuisine. Each dish tasted fresh, well-balanced, and authentically prepared. Service was attentive without being intrusive. The ambiance—warm lighting, traditional décor, and soft background music—created a cozy and cultural dining atmosphere. Overall, this Indian restaurant perfectly captures the heart of Kerala’s food culture: simple, flavorful, and soulful. Highly recommended for anyone who loves traditional South Indian food or wants to explore something new and deeply satisfying.

12/11/2025: This hotel is kind of sprawling with corridors in multiple directions. It was a challenge to haul our heavy luggage to our room (zero sign of any bell desk). Rooms are quiet though. Decent sleep quality given we were juggling an 8 hour time difference. Ended up extending our stay a few days because it was so comfortable. The Club Lounge is one of the weirdest I have ever encountered. Super small space that filled up fast. No staff working it during the happy hour so patrons have to clear plates etc. The food was kind of cheap with almost no variety from day to day. The only alcohol offered is draft bad wine...yes...you pull a lever to serve it from a barrel. Don't understand why they don't offer beer or other drinks. Some staff members came in once or twice to avail themselves of the Nespresso coffee machine. They chatted among themselves in the back and left. Again...super weird. Breakfast is good but there is no variety. The music is also insanely loud. These are things the hotel should be able to tackle easily. Wonder if they will? Parking is a little funky but there is a ton of it and it's free. Appreciated this very much. Several staff members really shone during our stay: David (Manager?); Elisa in the breakfast room; Daniela (Housekeeping). All things considered we had a very nice stay and would happily return to this cute town. The hotel is well located with several amenities a short walk away

11/11/2025: The hotel and room were very clean. There were three of us in the room, and the extra bed (a sofa bed) was really uncomfortable.

13/09/2025: Nice small restaurant, very good food and service.

12/09/2025: The food was very good. Two different fish dishes from the daily special, both deliciously prepared. The service was friendly but a little uncaring, which was a shame.

16/10/2025: We spent a Sunday evening here. Lovely music, staff and clientele. We didn't have food. Have great pints.

06/09/2025: Absolute great craic, Anne and Sasha are top lasses. The locals are a great laugh, Easily the best pints in Athlone, well worth a visit. Especially if you like dogs.

03/08/2025: Brunch time on a Friday! Place was very busy, but the staff did a great job keeping everyone attended. I had the small breakfast with a very nice coffee and the brown bread is DELICIOUS.

22/11/2025: UPDATE: Sister Trish and cleaner Mother has left Biddy’s Pub “ We are Fed Up of his Greed and Bullying “ So who is telling Lies Now readers .. Firstly I would like to state I have been frequenting Biddy’s O’Dowd’s Bar Athlone since Opening in 2022 a Couple of Times a Week during that time I rarely got a bad pint of Guinness their was NO PROBLEM replacing a pint if this happened but in Recent Times Bad Pints of Guinness were a Regular Occurrences at Biddy’s Bar Regrettably .. GREED is a TERRIBLE THING if your in the PUB / CATERING BUSINESS or any business serving the Unsuspecting Citizens of Ireland and Visitors DEADLY PRODUCTS … I have always Promoted Biddy’s O’Dowd’s or similar Business that is Selling Good Food or Drinkable Products I also frequented the old bar in the late 1980’s so I have the Experience of GOOD and BAD products like Guinness for FORTY YEARS which in anyone’s books Qualifies Me to WRITE this Review and Hurts Me at the same Time .. If Irish Citizens the Public Cannot Trust Publicans Luckily they are Rare around Athlone anyway ….. I also was SUBJECTED to Verbal Abuse by Chris Hewitt Licence Owner when he PHONED ME like a Creature POSSESSED … I hung Up on him … I received a Superb Pint of Guinness when i entered the Pub it was Very Quiet and I was the only customer drinking the Good Stuff “Guinness Draught” everyone else was drinking Beers / Larger which should raised a Red Flag for me ….. I complemented Trish Owners sister Chris on the Great Quality of the Guinness as I do Everywhere from Ireland to Portugal and further where I get a Great Pint of Guinness i ordered a Second Pint of Guinness The Second Pint was as different as Chalk and Cheese with Brown / Black Bubbles Accross its Head I won’t say Guinness as it wasn’t Guinness but Slops … How this Transformation from My First Superb Pint of Guinness to the Second Pint is IMPOSSIBLE unless the Barrel was finished and Trish replaced the Guinness Barrel with a New Barrel which was OFF also and could be Replaced with another New Keg if that is what Happened or the Original barrel was tampered with … I made Trish aware of the Problem and she Replied “ it might be the Glasses !!!! “ as she hadn’t changed the Guinness Barrel I left it with her I ordered a Replacement Pint of Guinness Trish but it was EXACTLY the Same UNDRINKABLE I made Trish aware again … New Customer entered the pub and Ordered a Pint of Guinness like a Shot Trish ran again down the stairse to the Cellar .. Trish visits the Cellar Very Frequently .. When Trish pulled and served a Pint of Guinness to the New Customer it looked Exactly the Same as my First Pint of Guinness which was a TOTAL Transformation ..NOT … I pointed the Guinness Transformation to Trish but got NO REPLY .. In fact I got the COLD SHOULDER !!!! I then Left Biddy as I was made UNWELCOME by Trish’s Attitude towards ME.. I got a Drinkable Pint of Good Guinness which I had No Problem obtaining in Athlone ….. I sent Trish a Picture of a “GOOD PINT” of GUINNESS which I had NO PROBLEM obtaining here in Athlone .. Less than an Hour I was Subjected to a phone call from Chris Hewitt Trish’s brother a TERRAIN of ABUSE ROARING DOWN the PHONE at ME HE was like a Creature POSSESSED .. I would also state their my be a Breach of the Data Protection Act 2018 as Chris Hewitt stated that he would make sure that I wouldn’t get served in any Pub an Athlone as he was printing my picture off Pub CCTV “ as I speak and sending it to them “ He also BARRED ME .. This is All Over me making Trish his sister aware of a Bad Pint of Guinness which can happen in any Pub .. I looked on Trish as a Friend telling her Personal Private stuff I thought we were Friends or so she made Out by Poisoning Me !!!! I drank in that old pub in the late 1980’s which has been closed for years that’s showing my age I was drinking here before Chris Hewitt was Born !! So I Hope Chris and Trish aren’t showing a different Side of themselves by being AGEST to their Customers !! They Definitely shown the Very Worst side of themselves that Morning Greed Terrible Thing

20/08/2025: This place is the best pub in town. Think Cheers, but in Ireland. The bartender and locals were super friendly, telling jokes and giving local recommendations. We spent a lot of time here and plan to go back later tonight after dinner. Would HIGHLY recommend coming here for a pint or chocolate espresso martini.

16/08/2025: I had a wonderful experience at this café. The breakfast was very tasty, but what really made the visit special was the staff. Everyone was very polite and welcoming. Even though my English is not perfect, one of the staff members explained the menu to me very clearly and patiently, which I truly appreciated. Her effort and kindness made me feel very comfortable. Great service and atmosphere – I would definitely come back!

22/10/2025: I really don’t like to leave bad reviews but Like others have said, this place had a great reputation so we decided to call for lunch. I was shocked to be guided to a table when it wasn’t busy to then be told if you wanted to pay by card you had to use the kiosk screen, which also was above the head of a lady who was eating her lunch and it felt very rude leaning over her. We apologised to her and she stood up to move out of our way. For a small business that used to have great character this was very disappointing. There was at least 3 lovely staff members going around with headsets which was strange and that could easily have taken our order. I couldn’t believe then after ordering and you go to pay it asks you want percentage of a tip you would like to give… what exactly are we tipping? There was no service prior to this. I also ordered poached eggs on sourdough toast and the toast came out 10 minutes before the eggs? Very strange. I love to support local businesses but I feel after this experience I won’t be back.

18/10/2025: Lovely food, tasty, fresh and top quality service. Very fast for such quality food. Exceptionally friendly staff , every staff member from opening the front door said Hello, we sat upstairs, nice bright room again, very friendly staff upstairs, when we were going all said goodbye and thanked us for coming. When we had started to eat- within a few minutes, we were asked if everything was alright, we were happy with the food and did we want anything else. Obviously the owner/manager/staff put a-lot of effort in. (Not that fussed on the QR ordering-the food and friendliness make up for this but it’s just something I personally don’t like in a restaurant)
