Good for the Soul

22/07/2026: This was my second time coming here and unfortunely both times there was some issues. The first we got asked to leave our table as our reservation time was up- which is fair enough as its mentioned on the website when booking that they only allow 1hr 10 but I was wanting to get a coffee and cake after our food and I felt we were rushed. We had been sat with empty plates for about 10-15 minutes in which time they could have been cleared and we could have been offered a tea or coffee.
Today was the second time and it was very dissappointing. The service was so slow, we waited a while to be seated despite having a reservation and ages until someone came and took our order. Luckily the food did come out quickly. I ordered the corination chicken pitta and it was tasteless, there were wilted salad leaves that I had to pick out, there were only two bits of pickled onions in the sandwich which was the only thing with any flavour. I really regretted ordering this and the price was robbery considering the gone-off lettuce and a bit of chicken. The eggs with black pudding was good however and the addition of the apple sauce is a great touch. Afterwards we were fully ignored until eventually I got up and ordered our tea and 2 cookies from the counter. The cookies were very delicious and gooey and I have to say were the best bit of the meal. They did cost €9 for two however, which is a lot! Overall €45 was a very expensive price to pay for bad service and mediocre food :(

The food was not terrible, but also not great. The pints were lovely though, and the staff were sound though so I'd its worth a stop.

09/07/2026: I went here earlier on today and I was very much impressed by the whole experience. The service itself was warm, friendly and genuine.
It wasn't terribly busy at the time so it was very easy to relax there.
Most importantly, the food was amazing.
There is a certain sense of authenticity with the menu. There aren't a million options on the menu itself which is a good sign that they prepare their menu well.
I had a lamb shank biryani that was so good that I can no longer have lamb anywhere else now because it could never compare. It had the perfect flavour and texture and just fell right off the bone.
The food was very filling also. We only ordered mains and we just barely manged to finish our meals, which is no small feat when it comes to us.
10/10, would reccomend.

04/12/2025: Beautiful gem of a cafe in the centre of Cork city!
Stunning crockery, decor and atmosphere inside and outside the cafe in a quiet mall.
But most of all, clearly the nicest hot chocolate I have ever tasted!
The cakes are also very tasty and the staff is very kind and pleasant.
Great place to stop by when Christmas shopping.
Looking forward to call again...

24/06/2026: Not nearly as good as it used to be. Ordered a glass of fresh orange juice and was presented with very watery overly sugary cheap ''juice''. It tasted like orange cordial. Asked the very young waitress if it was actually orange juice and she replied in a very miserable manner ''that's apple juice.'' then she realised it was in fact the ''orange'' juice they sell and it had come straight from a carton. I'd never even seen the brand they're using before.
Food was very average, lacking in flavour and finesse. Portion sizes have been very pared back - and the prices have risen a lot. The same waitress kept ignoring us every time we tried to catch her eye - she saw us gesturing and just avoided eye contact. We saw another customer repeatedly ask for service only to be ignored. The barista was also ignoring customers.
With so many other great eateries in Bantry on offer, De Barras simply isn't in the same league anymore. It used to be our favourite place to eat before they closed & reopened. Such a shame.
