28/09/2025: The food itself was tasty and service was quick, but my experience was spoiled by undercooked fish and chips. The cod came out cold inside with raw batter still clinging to it not just unappetizing, but unsafe. It completely ruined my meal. I wasn’t after a refund, just hoping the kitchen pays more attention, because no restaurant should serve fish in that condition.

03/11/2025: A nice pint & the food looked excellent, the people next us were tucking into nicely presented plates of food which smelt delicious. If we hadn't had an Ulster Fry an hour or so before hand we would have tucking into a plate of food ourselves!

06/10/2025: we loved staying in Scholar's; from the minute we stepped inside the door we were blown away by the welcome, the decor and the comfort. the night porter was extremely pleasant & helpful. even getting a gorgeous hot cup of tea brought to the room was such a simple but fabulous treat! we loved it! and we'll definitely be back.

28/09/2025: We come in every March and October to see family in Donegal and Scholars is our first stop. We've been coming for nearly 10 years and it feels like family. The service, the food, and everything about the hotel is wonderful.

27/10/2025: The food is always good, apart from the odd pizza I got which seemed well out of place in a restaurant like this, Pizza is almost like something you get from a takeaway but at that price no way it should be better. Steaks are getting smaller and smaller and everything in this restaurant although good is way way overpriced. I mean the food is solid but damn they charge you a premium and its too much imo. Service is great and cocktails are great if not very overpriced. Thats the main thing here, most folk wont care as its good but their pricing is high and will only ever go up. I always feel kind of ripped off when leaving.

12/07/2025: If you like your beverage and cake together you’d better tell them. We arrived and ordered coffee and cake. Codes delivered obediently and were lovely. But cake was delayed. When I asked I was told that there were two orders ahead of me and I’d have to wait. If I’d known that I wouldn’t have ordered cake. But the cake was there, and it needed the chef to take a knife and cut a slice out of it. That’s all. I offered to do it myself and suggested the waitress do it. But no, I was told the chef was very fussy (that’s fine, it means the food’s lovely) and I’d have to wait. I explained my coffee was cold and nearly gone and she said it would be along soon. All very well the chef being fussy (maybe OCD🤷🏻‍♂️) but I’m fussy too, liking my cake and hot beverage together. Not too much to ask. I’d love to do a 1-2 star review but the food is too good for that and it would be misleading.

20/08/2025: Went here for dinner with my wife in August. Best meal we've had in a while. Very relaxing pre dinner drink in the bar area while perus the menu. Then had a very nice meal. Starters of ham hoc terrine and crab creme brulee were fab. Then I had the lamb which was the tastiest and most tender I've ever had. My wife had the fish dish which was a very decent size and she thoroughly enjoyed it. Very good wine list but unfortunately could only try one as I was driving. We will most certainly return.

14/09/2025: Food was good when it came out. Took about 20 mins to order after asking could we have our order taken with drinks. Was told they would send someone down. Then told ill get ine of the girls to take your order when we asked again. No bread rolls with soup was told they would be down soon. Soup was barely warm when they did arrive. We had to ask 2 women for the rolls as we thought the first one was not bringing them down. -got charged for extra rolls- we didnt ask for extra juts the ones that came with the soup. Portion sizes small. Asked for glasses of juice for kids. Got brought down a jug and were charged for it @3.50 Definitely wont be back

03/11/2025: Decor and staff are lovely. Location is good with suitable parking. However, there is an unbearable smell from the toilets right at the door as you walk in which was not a pleasent greeting for the first time visiting. Food was not great. Sour taste from the mac and cheese. The seabass and potatoes were greasy and smothered together on a plate in dill sauce. Would have preferred the sauce on the side. I got apple crumble for dessert which was a bit of crushed apple on a plate with crumble thrown on top so it just fell apart.

30/10/2025: Went here for a family members 21st. Staff were very friendly and accommodating, always asking us how our food was and if we wanted more drinks. It was quiet but most likely because of bank holiday weekend lights festival in the centre of the town. Food was delicious and brought out promptly. Staff even helped by bringing out the cake. Would definitely recommend even for casual dinner outing or a group/family event.

04/09/2025: 4 of us recently dined at the Bay Tree on a Sunday evening. Immediately struck by the genuine warmth and friendliness of the staff which was then following up with faultless service. Food for all of us was excellent. Standout starter dishes were the Korean Chicken and Duck Samosas. For mains, the Whole Sole on the bone and Pork Belly dishes were beautifully presented, cooked with skill and full of flavour. First time dining at The Bay Tree. Will be back
