The best restaurants in Athlone

07/07/2025: After a full weekend of tennis this was a great place to visit and relax and make plans for the next few weekends. It is not far from the tennis club either . Food was great, service was great and they have a good wine list.

13/06/2025: We dined at Thyme this evening (first time). The interior in beautiful shades of green is stunning and so inviting. We had the filet and the halibut dishes. The 4 courses were just perfect. Very creative in both presentation and the various tastes which complement each other. The service was excellent with very knowledgeable and friendly staff!!!

04/07/2025: Best Thai restaurant around..love the pork belly stir fry with chilli jam..always a friendly and welcoming atmosphere..great restaurant 😊

All dishes came out and forgot my main and tried to blame it on a request that my partner had made some time after the order was taken. really disappointed. Also surely an authentic italian doesn't serve pineapple on pizza 😂

15/06/2025: It's the oldest pub in Ireland. I loved it; the decor is filled with old fishing rods, police patches, and lots of odds and ends. They have all kinds of beers and live music on certain days. There's paid street parking nearby.

05/07/2025: Had a great experience at Bacchus, great views, atmosphere with very welcoming and kind staff. The food is exceptional and is of Michelin level quality, Bacchus is unforgettable and genuinely is the best restaurant in Athlone.

28/05/2025: What an amazing 👏 bistro. The most wholesome generous salad l have EVER had. Gorgeous service, efficient and Affordable. Can't rate highly enough!

13/05/2025: Food is always lovely and there's a great selection of sweet treats. However we were charged €9 for a regular pot of tea which is absolutely scandalous! EDIT: came back a month later for lunch and got a smash burger. It was overcooked, very dry and the bacon was incinerated. Had to leave half of it behind as it was tasteless.

06/05/2025: After a long walk by the canal, we were looking for somewhere to get coffee and cake. Freshly made. Not full of preservatives. We walked past so many that just didn’t fit the bill, then came across this place. What a gem! The deep-filled apple & berries pie was superb: moist and not too sweet. The blueberry & almond slice was also delicious: again, nice and moist and not too sweet. We went for flat white coffee. Perfect temperature and a tasty roast, if a little strong. Thoroughly recommend this place.

06/07/2025: Went here last Friday evening with 2 friends for the Friday evening aperetivo. Had a selection of italian foods that you wouldn't normally experience in an Italian restaurant along with a selection of bruschetta. A lovely glass of nero d'avola. Very generous selection of food , great flavour and great value. We will be back!

02/07/2025: The pizza is just chef's kiss. I'm vegan and delighted to see 2 vegan options for the menu (marinara and vegan). It's a weekly appointment I can't miss out. The coffee is authentic Italian espresso. And the staff couldn't be lovelier! The very best to Chiara, Roberto and their family!

02/07/2025: One of the best meals i’ve had. Perfectly cooked, balanced flavors, good portion, a medley of tastitude and deliciousness. Truly a gem.

28/06/2025: I’ll be honest—when I first walked in, I didn’t have high expectations. It was a last-minute choice since everywhere else was fully booked, and I couldn’t help but wonder why this place still had space. But the food completely changed my mind. Really tasty, freshly made, and full of flavour. A great little spot that turned out to be much better than I expected. I’d definitely go back!

25/04/2025: This is a proper old school pub. Definitely call in for a pint if you're visiting Athlone. Very nice staff and patrons.

17/06/2025: We where passing after having a dinner in another local establishment and said we would stop and see could we get a table for cocktails and desserts as we are both chefs after reading the menu we where going to order all the desserts and the raspberry and white chocolate martini… To say the lack of professionalism by the head chef/manager was appalling the waiters where lovely and went to ask was it ok for us to have just the desserts the head chef proceeded to say there was cafes and coffee shops down the road go to them we where seated at the closest table to the pass and he made it very clear he didn’t want our business.. because of how rude he was we decided to pay for our bottled water and leave… he clearly has lost all passion for his job as most chefs would be delighted that a table of 2 walked in on a quite Tuesday evening and wanted to order all there desserts to try I don’t know is he stupid or just arrogant!!! Probley the latter

27/05/2025: This was once a favourite restaurant but it has gone down hill since last visited. Scallop starters were okay not a lot of taste . I had chicken and husband had cod again the taste was gone and dishes have got smaller. Got a plate of chips full of black bits look and tasted terrible. Was wondering why it wasn’t busy
