The best restaurants in Donegal

05/10/2025: Sometimes, it’s the simplest of dishes that are hard to get right… Take that age old takeaway favourite, Fish & Chips, for instance… intentions are usually good but invariably gets served as some insipid tasteless piece of is-it-or-isn’t-it-cod with a mediocre batter on top of a congealed mush of soggy chips. Sound familiar?? Enter AJ’s in Ballyshannon. The chips (…and they were PROPER chips) were plentiful and that lovely combination of fluffy centred and crispy outside, and perched on top of this potato perfection was a slab of the finest flakiest fishiest feed, swaddled lovingly in a blanket of the tastiest crispiest batter this side of Batterstown! I can’t begin to describe the joy that deep fried fish can bring, all that it was missing was being wrapped in a sheet of yesterday’s news. AJ’s are definitely doing fish the way fish should be done, light and lovely… I’m not codding! Treat yourself to a day off cooking with a takeaway the way takeaways are meant to be taken away. 15/10 for crispy coddiness!!

05/10/2025: My partner and I were here over the weekend. Food was amazing wonton soup delicious and the spring rolls are fab. Look like battered sausages but taste delicious. Had main courses and they were delicious highly recommended.

14/10/2025: While not there on an overnight stay, we did have the opportunity to visit. Lovley sea view, and dining area. The bar/lounge was worthy of a good rating. Staff we interacted with were friendly and helpfull. Will definitely have to stay over on my next visit.

12/10/2025: Stayed here for a weekend. Room and hotel inc location are very nice. However I can only rate the hotel 3 stars. They frequently hold concerts and their concert hall is not well isolated. Hardly slept the second night due to a concert that finished by about 1.30am.Just inform your guests about it before booking…And somehow the kitchen ventilation system was close to our rooms which made it impossible to open the windows. I am German, and trust me I like the smell of a a good sausage but having this smell around 24/7 was a bit too much for my taste.

19/10/2025: 13 of us stayed due to a family get together. Really great hotel. Loved the comfy, cosy beds. Had the best sleep. Plus a wonderful full sized bath. Food was great. The hotel itself is clean and smart. Staff are very friendly and helpful.

21/06/2025: As always the food was excellent. Since lockdown it is now takeaway only. Very busy so you need to order at least 30 minutes before you want it.

23/10/2025: Finally a Chinese takeaway that isn’t afraid to spice the food. Everything was freshly cooked so it took a while, but absolutely worth. For the waiting time we got some chicken wings for free. Great place 🙏

19/10/2025: Wonderfully comfortable hotel in county Donegal in Ireland. Friendly staff and reasonable rates. I took this hotel as I had a flight from Donegal Airport and there was a bus stop just outside the hotel to the airport. Bed is very plush and soft and the hotel is clean and good service. Breakfast is included as well.

24/09/2025: Lovely friendly accommodation in the wilds of Donegal. Very comfortable rooms, spotlessly clean. Homely food. What's not to love.

21/07/2025: The hotel didnt look great from the outside but inside is bright, clean and well maintained. The room was a good size and spotless, but oppressively warm and it made sleep difficult. It could do with air-conditioning of some sort and the fan supplied was of no help. The pool and facilities were clean and well kept. The staff throughout were really great, very friendly and helpful.

18/07/2025: We stayed in the Clanree hotel for our 30th wedding anniversary and I have to say one of the best experiences, hotel is beautiful, staff are lovely and the hotel is ideally situated . I would definitely recommend this hotel and I would go back there again.

12/10/2025: This hotel seemed more concerned about saving costs, rather than providing great customer service. Unlike most hotels we've stayed at, there was no coffee in the lobby. In addition, there were constant banging sounds in the hallway late at night. I will say that the food was very good.

12/10/2025: Had a fabulous back massage today from Stephanie. she was rly friendly and offered me advice after my treatment to ensure my back felt better in the future. all the staff my partner and i came into contact with were lovely and we really enjoyed the facilities throughout. my only issue is that the pool temperature could have been a tad warmer but i still enjoyed it nonetheless!

16/09/2025: Food very mediocre. Extremely bland, not seasoned. Dish was meant to include garlic potatoes, instead they were brown lumps of overcooked nothing. V disappointed. Definitely not worthy of the price tag. Service excellent. Was empty when we arrived for lunch, but huge big space.

14/10/2025: What’s the point of ordering online to collect only to turn up and be told to wait in the car park for 10 mins all while watching people pull up, order food and get served before I’ve gotten my food? Poor service!!

30/10/2025: Plenty of good food options, I got the kebab chip box which was really tasty. I was taking away my food, there wasn't much of a wait for the food and the staff brought the food to me when it was ready. Situated close to the bus station so this a perfect spot to have a bite to eat in after a long bus journey.

25/10/2025: Food is good, I cant fault that. However, you have gone back to charging 15cent for the deposit returns scheme, even though the drink comes in a paper cup with a straw. This seemed to have been rectified for a few weeks but its now back to square one. Another money making racket.
