Café Ruoge
Castlebar legal
12/10/2025: Had breakfast here yesterday. Really gorgeous. Service very quick even though it was busy. 3 of us left there full and very happy. Looking forward to a return visit
18/09/2025: What a gem of a place, we’d been to the Deli the day before and bought some granola and flour, and had a take out coffee, so we were really looking forward to a late breakfast at Café Rua.
First impressions were a fantastic welcome and real friendly people, nothing sham or pretend here.
What a great menu, absolutely something for all tastes and dietary requirements.
The chorizo, spinach and sautéed potatoes, topped with 2 perfectly poached eggs and accompanied with chilli relish was excellent.
Real fresh orange juice was delightful, and the coffee? Epic!
What a fabulous way to spend time being looked after in one of the best cafés I’ve visited.

The West
Westport
18/05/2026: After climbing Croagh Patrick we went into Westport, looking for a place for lunch. Went into The West Bar. Lovely atmosphere. Bright and cheerful. Food was really good. We had the Chicken and Stuffing Panini which was like a Christmas dinner in a roll and it came with a small gravy bowl. We also had a steak sandwich which came with peppercorn sauce and tasty really good. Had a glass of Coke and a Guinness and got change from €50. Menu had large selection. Staff were friendly and polite. Highly recommend. Would definitely return.
18/05/2026: Highly recommended! Food sublime!! Service friendly and personal!!

Bar One
Castlebar legal
12/05/2026: Great atmosphere, food and truly amazing staff, highly recommended!
30/04/2026: Very nice overall and always good food for a reasonable price the only things I think they can improve on are the chips are always scorching hot and impossible to eat for a while after arriving (You would actually need to leave them until you've nearly finished eating the rest before you can eat them), also the mens bathroom could be improved, currently they have a long trough instead of urinals but I think urinals are a lot nicer for a fancy restaurant. The issues are minor and won't affect me visiting in future as I have many times in the past

Oxtail
Balla
05/05/2026: To three restaurants in the county for sure. Always good for a special meal, but I'd recommend dropping in for a small bite or one of the specials on midweek. We often order all the starters to share and it's a real flavour journey. The wine is fantastic too!
07/04/2026: Excellent food and service. Recommended 👍

The Gateway Hotel
Swinford
18/04/2026: Great spot for lunch or a meeting or a drink.never stayed there but theyre friendly and helpful when i call in
27/03/2026: We went to the Gateway today for a family birthday. The sevice was slow but food was reasonable even though vegetables arrived when meal was nearly eaten. The main problem was with the service and attitude of staff. We asked for a jug of water before meal and asked two different girls on four different occasions without water arriving. When it did arrive the jug and glasses were slammed on table. We will not be back

Merry Monk
Ballina
09/03/2026: Good food and great craic at the bar. We were touring the Wild Atlantic Way and needed somewhere to stop for the night and grab a bite to eat. The Merry Monk was friendly, welcoming, and great value. A perfect spot if you’re passing through and looking for good food and a relaxed atmosphere.

Belleek Castle
19/04/2026: We had a fabulous time at the Beleek Castle. The desk clerk explained about the castle and signed us up for a guided tour. Tickets were reasonable. Our guide was a school teacher and he was very knowledgeable about the history of the castle. It is richly decorated with antiques and is popular with people planning weddings. The best 2 areas were the room of Jurassic fossils and the room of ancient weapons and armor.
05/04/2026: So I am incredibly sad to give such a low star rating for the food and castle but there are significant points of difference if you are interested in the environment and you subscribe to their “garden to table” ethos.
Firstly, the food was amazing and the staff were absolutely lovely. That said the cheese course was poor (and I’m sure the grapes weren’t local 🤣) but I think there were supply issues so the dish wasn’t as per the menu.
The Castle claims to have a walk to table philosophy versus miles for ingredients so I was surprised to see asparagus on the menu at the beginning of April. I asked the question to the waitress in terms of how they managed to have asparagus at this time of year. The lovely lady didn’t know but asked the kitchen and apparently they have “a very good gardener”. I will take that as a horticulturalist with a pinch of salt given the weather conditions.
The only thing that is absolutely unforgivable is that they burn peat, the carbon sink of the planet and the most precious resource known to man. Peat sale is banned in Ireland unless you have Turbary rights (local family’s use of peat for fuel but can’t be sold under law) but sadly I have seen that Airbnb’s and hotels that do not need to rely on cheap peat fuel as they are profiteering from people staying and they don’t seem to meet the Turbary right rules. They are not rural communities struggling with the cost of fuel crisis. I have been absolutely dumbfounded by the Irish’s approach to peat, it is heartbreaking 💔.

bridge st
Castlebar legal
31/01/2026: This is were all the cool kids go... of course I noticed it was the kids of the 90s. The best generation, But still cool nonetheless.
A great bar with some great cool hide away tables. This allows for decent chats and socialising, not provided by Bridge St, you have to bring your own.
Normally Irish bars have live bands, no shade as the kids say. But sometimes you want a bar with a great selection of drinks and to be able to speak to the people on your table. This is the place.
Staff are friendly and intuitive, not leaving you thirsty. Also there is a great outdoor area which allows for eating. There is even a food truck that parks right up to the outside tables. So there isn't much of a walk for a take away pint and meal. Also if you prefer other takeaway places, they all say that you can eat their food there too. The outside place is sheltered, but I wouldn't like to test it during a downpour.
06/12/2025: Great pub, friendly staff and a pleasant atmosphere.

Carne Golf Course Restaurant & Bar
Belmullet
04/05/2026: Ireland at its stunning best. Golf made wonderful. Whether it is wind burn or sunburn, apply Guinness.
25/03/2026: Carne is nothing short of the best course in the world imo. Also worth noting perhaps that golf is my life as a PGA pro and I've been fortunate to play most of the great courses in the world. Which should lend some credibility to this review. If your the soul searching golf type then Carne may just have the answers your looking for.
