The best restaurants in Mayo

29/06/2025: My girlfriend and myself went to Mocha Beans on Wednesday and it was unreal. The service and the food was the best we ever got. I even left a tip which I don't normally do. However, we returned today (Saturday) hoping for the same. We ordered exactly the same thing and I wanted to pay most of it in cash and the rest on card and I was bluntly told by a manager that they can't do two transactions. I thought "ok fair enough" and paid on my card. We took our seats and my mocha was brought down within 2 minutes and 5 mins later our food was brought down. The difference between the food and even the service between the 2 days was night and day. My BLT was nearly falling apart as if it was half-arsed put together and my girlfriend's wrap was more just warm than toasted. On Wednesday we were welcomed with open arms and made feel very comfortable. Today (Saturday) however, we didn't get a "hello how can I help?" or a "how are you?" or even a smile. Even though we ordered the same thing both days, I was charged an extra €2.50 which isn't here nor there but that's not the point. Overall, it is a lovely place but the difference between standards based on staff was hard to believe. This is most unfortunate because the food is a bit on the steep side price wise but it was worth it Wednesday.

15/04/2025: Mocha beans in Ballina is a really friendly quality coffee experience. The lady who prepared and served us couldn't have done more. Kay was cheerful, professional and more than happy to fulfill our order even though it deviated from the standard menu. The food was perfect and above the norm for similar places. Nice music and atmosphere too. Thank you.

25/06/2025: Visited today, and had to give them the review they deserve. The best Penne Pollo E Broccoli and garlic bread we ever had till now! Simple elegant and each bite had perfect creamy flavour.

17/06/2025: Had a great dinner here during our time on Achill Island. They have a separate vegan menu with 4 mains to choose from. I had the omelette, which tasted surprisingly really good. The base was a mix of polenta, onion and potato and they used vegan cheese too, which for once tasted good! Only 4 stars for food because the soft drink we ordered came in a small glass and wasn’t very fizzy anymore.

18/06/2025: A great gem of a restaurant tucked down a back alley. We had a really wonderful meal — I had the lobster salad and then the seared scallops and my husband had the duck; all were delicious and perfectly prepared. The service was friendly and efficient (but we never felt rushed). Would also recommend the caramelized lemon tart!

20/05/2025: We went around 3.30 pm after us ringing to find out times .We got our food that looked ok to start with .I had a burger which I have to say it was so hard I could not put a knife through it .I told the staff which said the could not take it off the bill but would take off the child's dinner .she was not very friendly . I have been there before and had lovely food so was disappointed. I went in to hotel and told them which they said would ring me back but I'm still waiting.Its such a shame.

17/04/2025: I was so lucky to receive a tour of the castle hotel! Carol was incredibly knowledgeable and we talked informally for an hour about Irish history as it related to the Knox-Gore Family and their residence over time including during the Great Famine and after their departure (i.e., the tuberculosis sanatorium, military barracks, and ultimately hotel, venue, and museum). After our insightful conversation, she took me on a tour of Marshall Doran’s exceptionally eclectic collections including geology, Irish history, and weaponry. I loved being able to feel the weight of the weapons from the medieval period and seeing an executioner’s sword limited to use for beheading gentlemen was quite the education!

25/05/2025: One of the best places to Eat breakfast,Lunch,Dinner or if your just stopping for a coffee and a treat.I highly recommend Ellie's.The staff are lovely nothing is a problem.Great value for money and you won't be hungry leaving.

05/06/2025: Stayed here for one night on 3rd June 2025, managed to bag the 10 bed dorm all to myself 🙌 staff were all really friendly and helpful, room was super clean and spacious and the cost included breakfast. Had a cheeky pint of Achill Island lager at the very cosy bar on site as well. Highly recommend this place.

15/04/2025: The proprietor, Pat, is amazing. He goes out of his way to make sure we are all comfortable and happy. Highly recommend if you are traveling alone or with family.

12/07/2025: What a culinary delight! All the pasta dishes were available gluten-free, and everything we had tasted absolutely delicious. Even the espresso! We ate there again the very next day.

28/06/2025: Delicious and authentic Italian at Il Volcano! Proper spices and blends of flavors -- excellent service. A large family birthday party of 20 people sat 15 minutes before us and the restaurant was otherwise packed -- one would not have known. Clearly a very efficient kitchen. Fresh ingredients. Oh - and we were a walk in -- they apologized profusely and asked if we could wait for an hour, but called us after 15 minutes to let us know they had a table opening for us. Highly recommend.
