13/10/2025: Busy little bistro, amazing location, close to river Shannon and Athlone castle. Sean's pub is next door. Good spot for brunch or lunch. Tables felt little bit too close to each other. Service was Ok, slower. Meals were good, tasty. There was only one problem and that was the state of the toilets. Dusty and dirty.
01/10/2025: Mediocre food. Overpriced. Empty restaurant. No thanks.

The manager, Margaret, and her staff were absolutely fantastic - attentive, friendly, and made sure everything was perfect for our special occasion. 24/10/2025: Got married here and everything was perfect, Becky was so helpful throughout the process of planning the big day since my husband and I both live in Scotland. I felt so relaxed and comfortable on the big day due to the professionalism of all the hotel staff and my guests have been raving about the rooms and the wedding meal. Highly recommend The Step House Hotel for all future couples that want to tie the knot at this lovely location. If I could give them 10 stars I would. Honestly best day of my life and it was made even more memorable. Will definitely be coming back to stay here as a regular guest.

30/06/2025: We ate here on both of our evenings in the beautiful village of Portmagee. Magnificent seafood, I had hake here on one night and John Dory the second - both fantastic.
We all ate well and had a visit from the friendly owner making sure all was well.
As an aside, we also had breakfast here, again it was excellent.
All servers were friendly, helpful and attentive. I could not recommend this restaurant/Balmore highly.
13/06/2025: We spent a week driving around eating at some really great restaurants in Ireland, but this one was one of the absolute best. An amazing surprise, considering the few choices in this town for food. Everything was done with fresh, quality ingredients and with a great attention to detail. Just a great surprise and an amazing lunch. Best brown bread I had in Ireland. The lamb shanks and the stew are highly recommended.

17/09/2025: The location was amazing! Right in the middle of Oia which is perfect. The service was amazing. Kostas ( the owner) went above and beyond. He helped us with what to do, he booked us reservations, cab services and much more. He was there whenever you needed him. The rooms were good too!
07/09/2025: Our room smelled strongly of chemicals. Service was decent. New carpet was nice. Room was clean.

I have eaten here before Christmas last and can't fault it.
There was a great buzz about the place and the service was equally great.
The restaurant is situated in the basement,
The decor is sharp with comfy seating and nice table settings.
My only quibble was that we were seated next to the front exterior wall and there was a cold draught running down behind me. I know that the weather was near freezing outside but it was uncomfortable for me !
Otherwise it was fantastic as always ..
4th time to eat there...

Great staff, food was beautiful and even the cocktails were to die for.
They even did a surprise happy birthday for my wife.
Now in my top 3 places to eat.

02/08/2025: We were here quite early on a Friday evening. Folk still leaving work ahead of a bank holiday weekend. There were only a few customers in at the time. A lot of reserved tables for later. The furnishings are mainly wooden chairs set around square tables, not very inviting when the pub is quiet.
The food was spot on. Good choice, reasonable prices for the area and very nice. Four of us had different meals, we were impressed by taste, portion size and service.
Beer and cider choice is better than some.
