19/11/2024: Ordered a cake for our mom’s 80th birthday dinner, the cake was described as ‘best ever in life’. Also ordered gluten free cupcakes and they were delicious. Can’t recommend Ann and the White Gables team enough, the food and service is incredible. A definite must for any occasion. Have ordered breads, cupcakes, cake and hampers from White Gables, 10/10 every time. Thank you Ann and team.

01/10/2024: A lovely bar, traditional, run lovingly by a family who've run it for decades. Right in front of a sea inlet , the owner was exceptionally kind & friendly to me & my learning disabled sister. Highly recommended. Pizza on sale but no actual restaurant open that day ( not sure of other days.) It wasn't "buzzing" but to escape from the stresses of modern day life, thus is your place. Picnic tables in front of sea. Ideal.

14/10/2024: We stopped here on a pub tour I'd organised for me wife's 40th. Jessica was really accommodating in planning this in advance and had an area out the back for us. She arranged food to be ordered in for us also. Lovely turf fire at the front bar too. Definitely recommend.

20/01/2025: We had a pre lunch drink in Murph's Bar.After sitting at a fabulous open fire and pre lunch G/T we walked around the corner to the Beach House.The fish was delicious ,Lemon Sole and Haddock served with chips. Our starter was crab which was served with traditional homemade soda bread and salad. I had a chilled glass of Sancerre and our young guest enjoyed a Sicilian Lemonade.Thanks to all we will be back soon.

26/10/2024: New setup now doing fish and chips with more regular opening hours. We had 2 different fish n chips with bottle of house white, 1 dessert & 1 coffee for €83. Was it worth it? Well the food was really good so top marks for that. However the place is devoid of warmth and feel good factor. The warm welcome was non- existent from the man in the hatch that checked us in. The decor is cold and the attempt at being a cool casual quirky place just doesn’t work. It’s basically an eat and go fish n chips setup which might suit the owners …… but not the customers. Oh and €33 for house wine in a cafe is taking the ….

20/11/2024: I got kicked out for having no money after my older sister was paying for me too share her food. I was with my friends and since we all were sharing I was discriminated and disgusted by how the manager handled this situation I will never come back and will tell my family how I was treated. 0/10 don’t waste your time and money on a place of discrimination

12/11/2024: Drove for 59 minutes for my first ever experience of the much loved smacks. They say the place closes at 10. Does it? Well I tell ye one thing and I’ll tell ye it for free, it clearly doesn’t! Arrived at 21:40 only for the door to be locked and the worker look at me through the window! Tried to knock the door but she was for having absolutely none of it! I will be telling my grandkids about the first time I went to carrickmacross for my first ever smacks and got turned away at the door like a 16 year old at the local trying to get full of a Friday night. Worst day of my life. Pretty cool cat outside all the same.

30/03/2025: Possibly caught on a bad day as this was not how we remembered it from the last time but the staff seemed extremely disorganised. From forgetting to bring out dishes and some being late due to being "dropped" in the kitchen and waiting on another, I thought that this overall brought down the mood as some people were finished their dinner before the last two finally appeared. We were also asked about ordering desserts when the dinners hadn't even been produced yet. The food itself was quite standard but wasn't very enjoyable, many dishes were way too salty or too bland, no in-between. When the prices of a place are that little bit higher we would expect the standard to also be higher, seemed like a waste of a meal. One of the described "prawn pasta" dishes came out with rice and pasta with the creamy sauce in the middle and some randomly dotted tomato sauce dollops, when I inquired I was told that that was the way the chef does this dish, it should really be reflected in the menu as some people can't eat rice. An odd combo really. The only praise I would have for this particular day was that some staff were lovely (just not on the ball), the location is good and the kids dinners were good. The picture shows the rice around the outside untouched and the sauce in the middle. Very disappointed.

30/03/2025: Last time I was here was about 10 years ago, on that occasion I had the nicest cold seafood platter with brown bread and salad. So I must say after returning today for mother's day I was very disappointed with what I ordered. Not only me, we were a party of 8, but a lot of the dishes seemed to be a little off, whether too salty, bland or just a little strange. Servers were lovely but seemed a bit unsure of what was ordered, missing, etc. For starter I ordered seafood chowder (which arrived more than 5 minutes after everyone else) I'm sorry but this was the worst chowder I ever had, more random veg floating around in it than fish... So big chunk of cauliflower, half a baby spud, a couple of ripple cut carrots (frozen carrots I guess) two prawns, a calamari ring, no salmon, no haddock, no mussels, no clams just a cauldron sized bowl of the liquid, served with garlic bread slices, where is the bread roll or Irish brown bread, why garlic bread? For main course I had a seafood pancake, I never had one served this way... In a cassoulet style dish pancake on top covered in melted cheese, I found all the fish that was meant to be in my chowder under the pancake, prawns with tails and all still on... But the sauce tasted exactly the same as the chowder liquid. Lettuce, strawberries, blueberries and salad dressing was the side salad served in a Petri dish? Is it a salad or a science experiment? €10 for chowder, €20 for seafood pancake is a pretentious, especially when it was so wrong and bland. Now for the positives... The kids pasta and ice-cream looked the best out of all the dishes. Well done, they were happy. Barman very nice, servers also very nice but taking a wild guess the kitchen is where the issues lie. Maybe it is time to condense the menu to something more manageable for the kitchen. The menu is huge and then a specials board also, perfect the smaller menu and have some consistency. Please get rid of the terrible egg/fruit side salads in Petri dishes. There is no need for them. 2/8 people were happy with what they got and they were the kids. I hate writing reviews like this but I do hope you take the advice on board and try right the wrongs. Service was a bit hectic with late/dropped dishes, servers asking what was missing, etc. A party of 8 shouldn't be a huge challenge.

24/12/2024: The George V Restaurant at Ashford Castle offers a truly magical atmosphere, especially during the festive season. The elegant Christmas decorations, the historic castle setting, and the warmth of the fireplace create a charming and luxurious ambiance that makes the visit feel special from the moment you arrive. While the atmosphere was impeccable, the overall experience fell short in other areas. The food, unfortunately, was inconsistent. The scallops were overcooked and overwhelmed by a chaotic plate presentation, while the winter salad impressed with its fresh ingredients and creative dressing. The black sole fillet was cooked well but accompanied by two types of potatoes, making it feel less refined, more akin to pub fare than fine dining. Desserts were limited to mousses and soufflés, with no cakes or other creative options, highlighting the need for a skilled pâtissier to add variety and finesse to the menu. Service, though attentive in some respects, did not meet the standards expected of such a prestigious venue. Key oversights included: Coats were not taken upon arrival, an unusual omission in a high-end setting. Wine was served only after the food had been brought to the table, disrupting the natural flow of the meal. Basic fine dining etiquette was missing. For instance: Serving and clearing from incorrect sides. Crossing into guests' personal space rather than walking around the table. Stacking plates while clearing. Not replacing dropped napkins promptly. Additionally, the waiting staff lacked the refinement and poise expected at such an establishment, detracting from the overall sense of occasion. That said, we appreciated Manager Andrej's warm attention and the thoughtful anniversary treat, which added a personal touch to the evening. However, given the steep pricing, the value for money was disappointing. The quality of both food and service does not justify the high cost, leaving us feeling that the experience lacked the polish and excellence one expects at such a renowned location. While the ambiance and charm are undeniable, significant improvements in both service etiquette and culinary execution are needed to make the George V Restaurant a truly exceptional dining destination.

07/11/2024: Very nice restaurant. Great service, in particular from Robert and Adrian. The table d’hôte menu was delicious and we really enjoyed the evening. It’s not cheap but I think the prices were fair for the quality of the food and venue. The staff were particularly friendly and added to the evening.

15/03/2025: We popped in for a bit of lunch, during a rainy day visit to Clifden. The bakery was warm and welcoming , with a huge array of sweet and savoury treats to choose from. We enjoyed a tasty steak and kidney pie. Definitely recommend.

20/01/2025: I popped in here for breakfast & ordered a full Irish. It is very difficult to do a fry up badly but somehow this place managed it. It did not appear to be cooked fresh, especially the rashers which had a strange taste off them. Would not eat here again.

17/03/2025: Ordered online for collection. Was given collection time of 18.15pm Arrived at supermacs at 6.05pm as had another order to place . Wasn't served till 6.20pm. Placed order stood aside for another 15 minutes waiting . Was given order and then I asked for my order placed for collection too, the pizza hadn't even been made yet . At this stage I was too annoyed to wait for them to cook the pizza plus my other food was going cold. I just said give me 2 burger meals instead. I was given burnt chicken goujons as compensation to which were inedible. ☆☆☆☆ update☆☆☆☆ Was given a €20 courtesy voucher as an apology dealt with efficiently and promptly. My next order was perfect on using said voucher , food was fresh, Piping hot and delivered within minutes.

05/04/2025: I've been to the Beaumont House twice. Once for an evening drink, and once for lunch the day after Mother's Day. I love this type of pub, as it is reminiscent of pubs that I frequented in my dim and distant 20s , dare I say it, in the UK. Anyway, I felt very much at home and they have a lovely cider on tap. The day after Mother's Day, we went for a bite to eat for lunch. Now I will admit that we were much the worse for wear, and probably shouldn't have ordered food, but we did make a valiant effort. My son and I ordered roast corned beef and my daughter a pasta dish. Again I must stress that we were under the weather and so didn't really enjoy the meal to it's fullest, but I did think that €52 was a tad pricey for the food we ordered. This didn't include any drinks. I do look forward to going again under healthier circumstances, so that we could feel we got better value for money.

02/04/2025: Mean on the meat portion, food lacked flavour and is extortionately over priced for a bit of veg! Expected better

03/02/2025: Chicken Wings starter to share which were OK however didn’t seem cooked to order with some sauce burned under the wings in the dish. Then left 40 minutes for main course. One table who sat before us had their starters cleared after us and their mains finished well before ours arrived. We did ask a member of what seemed management (in blue shirt) to check on our food. This member of staff never returned to our table but rather had a waitress let us know that our food was on the way..we waited a further 10 minutes. Two other tables sat after our starter was cleared and had their meal finished before ours arrived. Chicken & Bacon Vol a Vonts weren’t hot and the Burger was dry and crumbly with no sauce on the burger. Both were served with chips which needed the oil changed. A Bank Holiday isn’t a good enough excuse for this service and poor food.

07/01/2025: Years Tavern has been a favourite place to stop for food when we are in the area. On entry it's extremely inviting, has a very warm ambience that makes you feel very comfortable and cosy.Staff are friendly and efficient. Clean and tidy.

16/02/2025: Great selection of food, lovely staff. I would highly recommend Mulhall’s for excellent food, I had shepherds pie it was beautiful. Plenty of desserts to choose from. We will be back.

14/12/2024: Visited this cafe with my daughter yesterday while I was in the cue I noticed staff were under pressure with orders been taken but at the end of the service counter there was a guy counting money from a till this before 2pm the cue was getting longer, there was elderly gentleman waiting for someone to take his money his food was getting cold so he asked this guy to take his money and they guy said no to get one of the counter staff to take it as he was cashing out on this till he was standing at for nealy half hour the old man voices his dissatisfaction which he had a right tos poor management and poor business practices and customer service from a person in position of responsibility who failed basics of customers service which is customer always comes first and when it's busy as this establishment was yesterday then this guy should have rolled up his sleeves and got stuck in to help behind the counter to at least relieve pressure on other counter staff good management is when a leader leads and not just bark orders or leave work for everyone else to do he could have left tills till later in evening as doing them at later time would not have been difficult thing to do, i would have scored this 5 stars but after what i witnessed from behaviour of manager left me with no choice but to score it 3 stars let's hope by my next visit practices and customers service attitudes by management will have changed today one individual has let all his team down on a review score point it's a pity as other staff were absolutely fantastic and were apologetic for their managers lack of consideration to restaurant customers service attitudes

16/09/2024: What a fantastic place. We had two coaches over in Ireland and needed a place to eat. With only a 2hr warning they managed 60 meals in under 1 hour. Everything from the service to the food was brilliant. I would recommend this venue to anyone. Many thanks we will be back.
