Up@Brews

Dublin
01/07/2025: (Long review) Speaking as a former employee of up@brews, make sure you are aware what it is they expect from you, because they will expect you to work 9hr shifts with no breaks, and if a customer complains about something relating to you, the owner or manager won’t relay it back to you until you get sacked, at least that’s my experience that happened. I worked in up@brews for 4 months, I enjoyed working there, getting to know the locals and staff, as well as improving on my job as a barista. One day I took a 30 min break during a 9hr shift, since it is your basic worker’s right. (I have done 9hrs and once a 10hr shift before with up@brews and never took a break) It was at 12pm on a Wednesday/Thursday, a time when it was quiet, people were in work, school, college etc, and the only people we’d get was the odd dog walker or two. I never understood, during the 4 months I worked there why there was no one with you on the day so you can take a break. At that time I decided I would sit outside, have a bite to eat and drink and sat right outside the shack. I left a note stating “I would be back at 12.30pm sharp”. I came back at 12.30pm to look after customers and I didn’t think much of it after that. That was until 8 whole days later when I was opening up, I got welcomed by a note at 8.30 in the morning, telling me I’m not allowed to take a break and that I was only allowed toilet breaks. I was baffled, no text, no call from the manager or the owner, nothing. On the same day (another 9hr shift) before I even got to close up, the manager came down and told me it was my last day. I had to wait a week after I got sacked to find out the reasons. Eventually the owner reached out and told me taking a break was one of the main reasons. He tried to explain the person who complained is a “good customer”. In my eyes, a “good customer” should understand that you are entitled to a break if you’re a working a 9hr shift. There were other reasons (the odd coffee or so wasn’t up to standard) I owned up to some of the complaints that were mentioned, which was fair enough. One thing I couldn’t wrap my head around as I asked to owner, why I was not given my 3 strike warning penalty, which is what workers in Ireland should get when a complaint is made, and as to why was I not told sooner about these complaints instead of weeks later. The owner seemed annoyed that I was still texting him and refused to answer my questions saying that “You don’t need to keep going back and forward with this”. All I simply wanted was an answer as to why he and the manager let it all bundle up into one, instead of telling me, so I could’ve prevent these things from happening again. It’s a shame because I really liked working there. Staff and the manager were great, 99% of the customers were some of the nicest people I’ve ever met. Even the owner, I will admit, before all this messiness happened, he was very nice and welcoming to me and I truly appreciated that. Unfortunately though, it had to end because I was following my basic workers rights and the owner or manager never told me about the previous complaints I had received sooner, leading it to all bundle into one. I think it is poor from them, giving the role and responsibility they have. It’s a shame, I’m the type of person who always wants to improve and get along with everyone, I made some lovely connections with customers and staff, but I can’t get over the fact no one would alert you if you have gotten a complaint or an issue, which would lead to your sacking. Just because the manager and other people don’t do breaks for 9hrs work (which they’re entitled to bearing in mind) that does not mean I can’t say, no, I’m taking my break.
14/03/2025: Big toasties of very good quality at an excellent price! Perfect for a takeaway quick stop, but you can also sit outside if you wish. Highy recommended

Ginzeng

Dublin
03/07/2024: People raved about this Ginzeng. Tried ordering orange chicken, lady said they had none today. Opted for the king prawns (I think salt & pepper?) at €10.00. Asked if it came with rice - yes, for another €5.00. Ditched the rice idea. They called me to the counter when my prawns (shrimp, actually) were ready Five of them. FIVE prawns on a bed of huge slices of green pepper and onion, with a few dots of chillies. Prawns were crunchy - not the batter, the actual prawns - and I couln't eat partially-cooked green pepper and onion. Took my tray (with the serving dish still full of "veg") to the counter when I was done, and was told to take it to a stand outside another restaurant. I pointed out that maybe a staff member could take it, and maybe show the chef how much of the meal was still in the dish. "No, you take it over there." Which I did - and I will remain "over there" next time I'm at Liffey Valley. Shocking prices, unexpectedly disappointing food. 1 out of 5, only because this page won't let me put 0.5.
08/03/2024: The Square Tallaght. Staff unfriendly, rude and unaccomadating. I got A four item box to sit in I requesting a little more curry sauce over my meal. I was advised if I wanted more I would have to for the curry sauce. Absolutely shocking. Zero customer service.
