Up@Brews

Dublin
22/10/2025: Great toastie and coffee. Lovely friendly staff and parking.
17/10/2025: (Long review) Speaking as a former employee of up@brews, make sure you are aware what it is they expect from you, because they will expect you to work 9hr shifts with no breaks, and if a customer complains about something relating to you, the owner or manager won’t relay it back to you until you get sacked, at least that’s my experience that happened. I worked in up@brews for 4 months, I enjoyed working there, getting to know the locals and staff, as well as improving on my job as a barista. One day I took a 30 min break during a 9hr shift, since it is your basic worker’s right. (I have done 9hrs and once a 10hr shift before with up@brews and never took a break) It was at 12pm on a Wednesday/Thursday, a time when it was quiet, people were in work, school, college etc, and the only people we’d get was the odd dog walker or two. I never understood, during the 4 months I worked there why there was no one with you on the day so you can take a break. At that time I decided I would sit outside, have a bite to eat and drink and sat right outside the shack. I left a note stating “I would be back at 12.30pm sharp”. I came back at 12.30pm to look after customers and I didn’t think much of it after that. That was until 8 whole days later when I was opening up, I got welcomed by a note at 8.30 in the morning, telling me I’m not allowed to take a break and that I was only allowed toilet breaks. I was baffled, no text, no call from the manager or the owner, nothing. On the same day (another 9hr shift) before I even got to close up, the manager came down and told me it was my last day. I had to wait a week after I got sacked to find out the reasons. Eventually the owner reached out and told me taking a break was one of the main reasons. He tried to explain the person who complained is a “good customer”. In my eyes, a “good customer” should understand that you are entitled to a break if you’re a working a 9hr shift. There were other reasons (the odd coffee or so wasn’t up to standard) I owned up to some of the complaints that were mentioned, which was fair enough. One thing I couldn’t wrap my head around as I asked to owner, why I was not given my 3 strike warning penalty, which is what workers in Ireland should get when a complaint is made, and as to why was I not told sooner about these complaints instead of weeks later. The owner seemed annoyed that I was still texting him and refused to answer my questions saying that “You don’t need to keep going back and forward with this”. All I simply wanted was an answer as to why he and the manager let it all bundle up into one, instead of telling me, so I could’ve prevent these things from happening again. It’s a shame because I really liked working there. Staff and the manager were great, 99% of the customers were some of the nicest people I’ve ever met. Even the owner, I will admit, before all this messiness happened, he was very nice and welcoming to me and I truly appreciated that. Unfortunately though, it had to end because I was following my basic workers rights and the owner or manager never told me about the previous complaints I had received sooner, leading it to all bundle into one. I think it is poor from them, giving the role and responsibility they have. It’s a shame, I’m the type of person who always wants to improve and get along with everyone, I made some lovely connections with customers and staff, but I can’t get over the fact no one would alert you if you have gotten a complaint or an issue, which would lead to your sacking. Just because the manager and other people don’t do breaks for 9hrs work (which they’re entitled to bearing in mind) that does not mean I can’t say, no, I’m taking my break.

Thunders Home Bakery

Dublin
31/12/2024: I bought a cake from the Phibsborough shop on Saturday, the 21st, and was assured by the staff that it would stay fresh until the next day. But when I opened the box on Sunday, the strawberries were moldy, and the cake tasted awful. We had to throw the whole thing away—it was completely inedible. I contacted customer service, and on December 30th, they told me they couldn’t refund me because I had thrown the cake out (as if I was supposed to keep a moldy cake in my house for over a week!). They offered me a free replacement cake instead, but after such a terrible experience, there’s no way I’d want another cake from them. In short, they sell moldy cakes, and even when you show detailed photos, they refuse to refund you. I wouldn’t recommend Thunders to anyone. There’s a Tesco right next door that sells fresh cakes for half the price—and they’re actually good!

Tom Steele's Bar

12/05/2025: The guy with the white hair who claimed to be the owner had the worst attitude. When we asked to play pool he asked for ID and said he was busy with actual customers and that pubs are for drinking. When he asked us to hurry up with the IDs, we decided to leave as it wasn’t worth it. Worst service I’ve ever experienced, was also waiting 15 minutes before he came over to me. One of the rudest people you could interact with. Would not recommend 👎

The Brasserie at Clayton Hotel Leopardstown

Dublin
